Uno Turbo restoration

I've got an Uno Turbo that has been garaged for the last 10 years that needs some TLC to get back on the road. I'd like to do a full restoration, strip down, repair and remove all rust etc, repaint. Also all the mechanical stuff will need to be overhauled.

I used to run 15" wheels but I'd like to get larger wheels on so I can get more grip. Is it still possible to get wide body kits? Or will I have to make my own wheels arches?

I do somewhere, it's basically in good condition for its age, I'll dig some out.

Re: Uno Turbo restoration

In Germany we use Rabbit I or Polo I ( a smaller VW than Rabbit ) repair wheel arches to widen them. You can also pull then out a bit.
But I donīt see any point in it if you have a 195/45 15" tyre. To get more grip itīs better to use a differential lock.
If you want I can make a contact for you to an Austrian guy who builds a genuine type one for about 250 $. A lot of people have used it here and it works fine.

Re: Uno Turbo restoration

Why wouldn't you use more rubber to get more grip? All depends on how fast you want to take that corner I was looking at road legal slicks and they come in sizes that are awkward for an Uno.

My brother gets back from Cameroon tomorrow, said he was going to start working on my car to get it drivable/movable, all the brakes are seized at the moment, it's been sitting for years

Re: Uno Turbo restoration

Love that car.

Sadly I only have an Uno 70s, (2 actually) and sadly they both have sunroofs.

Otherwise one of them would be in excellent order, only rust is around the sunroof.

I am thinking about putting a full non sunroof roof in one of them, costly I know, but I love the simplicity of these cars, no electronics to go wrong~

Not the same for turbos I know, but I have all the turbo and electronic fun I need with my Saabs.

Re: Uno Turbo restoration

I remember this one!

You put it on Turbo Collective too??

Didn't you go to Canada or something to live and work?

As for kits, you can put on the Hormann body kit (goggle it with something like "Hormann body kit uno")

Re: Uno Turbo restoration

Alaska, been here 3 years, the cold and dark are beginning to get old, scenery is amazing but the towns aren't up to much!

I'd like to move to Oregon or somewhere like that, if I can't get somewhere better I might be back in the Motherland before too long. It's amazing how you can miss simple things like roast dinners, mushy peas, fish and chips. You can't even get a good curry over here

The Mrs and I tried to get into Canada but they shut the doors pretty quick as soon as the World economy went bad, besides I've no interest in learning French, I hated French at school

Re: Uno Turbo restoration

I was looking at the Lester kit, the factory in Italy will still make me one, found a guy in Edinburgh who is an agent for them. Maybe you know, do they give much scope for putting on wider wheels? Looking at the rear arches it looks like it's just an inch or 2 of solid fibre glass that gives a wide look without leaving much (if any) room for a wider wheel.

Re: Uno Turbo restoration

I tried to buy one of those kits about 8 years ago, the guys in SA wouldn't take my credit card they wanted me to send the electronic equivalent of cash (said it was because of fraud).

I mean no offence to anyone in SA but I wasn't about to send some fella in Africa $500 and hope he was honest.

Kit is nice thought, looks like a copy oif the Hormann mk2 kit, the best looking Uno kit IMHO.
