Hi guys,

My first 'major' job on uno 1100, inside engine bay. mybe not for you hotshots but its a big issue for me

Smoke coming from gearbox hole, i was in tears to realize my cars clutch went.

Is there some kind of step by step tutorial i cud use to fix this problem please i would take one for the team for someone who could help me. :worship:

*engin starts fine and i can change gears and drive off but i'am worried what if i drive it like that and it could cost me a long walk home.

* farty smell coming from engine bay  Excuse my impoliteness

* i am in the bush!!! Yep, Africa

So please guys shine a light on me to keep my beauty running....

Also is it possible to remove gearbox without removing engine?

Hi , check the cable to make sure it's just not snagged-up,

if it's smoking , then it probably won't last long,
yes you can supports the engine on a block , and remove the gearbox- BUT it's fairly involved,

best to loosen front left suspension ,

Hi there

I a bit tight in time at the moment, including some business travels overseas. I'll try to compile some information but send me a PM if you need help. I did this job for the very first time two months ago so I know reasonably well the challenges you will face.

Start thinking about the tools you need, these are the critical ones:
1) Axle stands
2) One dedicated jack to hold the engine while the gearbox is out
3) A trolley jack to move and hold the gearbox
4) Range of spanners, wrenches and sockets (always use 6 points sockets, avoid 12 points), extenders an allen key bit to remove the gearbox oil
5) Tool to lock the flywheel, although something can be improvised
6) Improvise a tool to align the clutch (or the proper tool)

There are some good guides around, in the Cinquecento part.

Bye for now (y)
I'll update this later.

hi th guysi am realy stranded here, i went and bought Clutch, pressure plate and release bearing from reliable distrubuter today.

My question now is?? Is it not easier to remove engine and work on gearbox ?

I have the necessary tools at hand and working space and experience mec if i needed his help ;)

U all have realy given me new hope, i almost gave up on my lil black bird,

Hi again

This is a good guide: https://www.fiatforum.com/cinquecen...utch-cinquecento-sporting-1-1-ohc-engine.html

There will be some differences comparing to the Uno:
- the gearbox linkage is composed of rods only with balljoints
- the driveshaft fits into the gearbox (four bolts only and the gaiter comes out with a flange)

When removing or refitting the gearbox, you have to slightly lower the engine. Otherwise the gearbox won't have enough room as it will be constrained by the subframe.

Personally I had an awful time refitting the gearbox as I was not using the trolley jack as in the pictures of this guide.

Don't know if it easier to remove the engine. I doubt it... you will have many more things to disconnect.

Good luck!

wil change clutch tomorow, if i can find a camera i wil take pictures (y)

(mybe make a guide):D

hi again ,
do you mean the gearbox has seized so the gears don't change / wheel doesn't turn

OR

you can't get it off the engine at the bell- housing..??,
if that's the case then double check you've undone ALL the bolts around the "bell-housing",
AND removed the starter motor,

the "bell-housing" is actually aligned to the engine faces with 2 hollow dowels - "tubes"( that bolts pass through)

you may have to wiggle the gearbox to get it to shuffle off the dowels.. MAKE SURE the gearbox is still supported by a jack /etc as it's pretty heavy..( @ 30 / 40 KG),
good luck,
Charlie

alexGS where are you?

In Hamilton, New Zealand :)

Have you removed the tin plate underneath the gearbox, on the side next to the engine sump? There are two 10mm bolts underneath plus one up near the driveshaft (quite difficult to see/get to). This plate must be off to allow the gearbox to come off (it covers the back of the engine flywheel).

its finaly off! wil try puting it together tonite, want to replace c.v. joints and frost plug while i am at it.

Well done you!

Take your time... take your time. I am sure it is easy but personally I found a pig to put it back in.

hi guys, gearbox is in. now the gears are going in when car is off but struggle or not at all wana go in when car idles. i think its the master cylinder of clutch that requires a seal replacement. then back to bleeding. because its dripping under the steering.
The clutch plates on the flywheels is dead center, i could feel the gearbox and engine going in when i fitted it back. Oh well im proud of the job i did.

will try in a lil bit again, enjoying a cupof "rooibos tea" first!(y)

damn nipple of slave cylinder seems to have stripped, aswell the inside of the cylinder..:bang:

the cylinder doesn't seem much but the nipple its obvious its stripped.

No wonder i could not get the system to bleed properly because of air entering through the sides of nipple thread. Guess it would need replacing.

Seems if one thing goes the whole basket tips over.

Thats the joy of old cars, you start what you think will be a simple job & you find several other things need doing....

The alternator went on my Jag a couple of weeks ago, one bolt took over 2 hours to remove because the thread had ripped in the middle of the bolt & you could only move the ratchet 20 degrees at a time, then I broke a pipe fixing (£15) when re-fitting the 230cm long serpentine/fan belt by leaning on it, but I hadnt put the belt on all 7 pulleys properly, which damaged it (£78), then another hose fixing broke (another £15), & all of this was in minus temperatures outside... :bang:

Oh, & I realised the front edge of my floor has rusted through while it was jacked up... :(

Cars eh? (y)
