Re: dent (small) on bonnet how to remove?

Hi All,

Can you post a picture – not sure how bad the dent/cracked paint is. If it’s only a stone chip, you can get a colour specific touch up pencil. Sort it ASAP – stitch in time saves 9 and that.

If your Uno is in its original colour there should be a paint code to the right of your rear windscreen.

FIAT sells “Lineaccessori” touch up pencils for about £3, but (I think) discontinued aerosol sprays in the 90s.

Could anyone tell me where I might get some “113 Rosso Racing” paint? I need enough to cover the hatch, a door, and a wing. I’d prefer the original paint to a colour match.

Re: dent (small) on bonnet how to remove?

you could call those deny removal guys who come to you. rather than trying to remove it yourself

Re: dent (small) on bonnet how to remove?

Hi, to remove the dent in the bonnet, open bonnet and loosen 2x 10mm-head bolts on each side. Bonnet should then lift off. Dent gone! :)

Basically your best bet is to get some filler, an aerosol can of primer, 80, 240, and 400 grit sandpaper, and a spraycan of paint colour-matched to your requirement (white?) Be aware that the white paint may be hard to match - test it first.

There you go, your first dent-repair project...

Use the 80-grit sandpaper to sand all the paint off around the dent. Mix up some filler and apply with a flat spatula (piece of cardboard etc.) Don't worry if you don't get all the dent in one go. After 30 minutes or so, use a sanding block with the 80 grit paper to sand it flat. Try not to use your fingers to do the sanding... use a block, you'll be surprised at how wavy the result is if you don't.

Once the dent seems to have gone, sand very carefully with 240 grit to make sure that all scratches from the 80 grit are gone. You might like to apply a thin coat of primer and sand that off, because that will show if any scratches remain. Then, apply two coats of primer and allow a day or two to dry. Get a bucket of water and sand with the 400-grit sandpaper, wet. Finally, dry it and spray on the topcoat paint.

Whether you want to do the above depends on how 'mint' the car is, the dent removal guys are a nice idea for expensive/good condition cars. Otherwise it's a useful skill to have, to fix your own dents, as there's sure to be more in the future ;)

Edit: Dave's answer is a good one as well!

Re: dent (small) on bonnet how to remove?

Yeah Dave, that was the answer I was leaning towards first with the 'unbolt it and it's gone' idea!

However, I know that no matter how many bonnets or other panels you have to choose from, you eventually reach the stage where all of the choices have at least one dent...

I paid the equivalent of 20 pounds and a five-hour round trip to collect another Uno bonnet to replace my bonnet that has huge bum-shaped dents. Well... the replacement has crazed paint and a number of small dents along the edges of the raised centre... "go figure" as they say...

Alex – I figure you’ll be looking for a culprit with a big ass? Did they leave any other clues? That sounds like some drive M8 – are the parts rare round your way?

Charlie – as Alex says (on another thread) – the color difference returns each time you t-cut – till there’s no paint left.

I recently re sprayed most of my driver’s door, and it now looks worse under street light. – Still it’s well better than the last finish by daylight.

Re: dent (small) on bonnet how to remove?

About the dents... I have no idea how they got there. It was in the Uno's previous life as a student car. Hopefully the culprits were good-looking, big ass or not.

About the colour difference... what I was trying to say was that you should get paint mixed to original colour and T-cut the rest of the paint to reduce the colour difference!

The back two doors I've fitted to my Uno are actually a different red in the first place - they are 140 Rosso Corsa whereas my car is 854 Rosso (described as Rosso Chiera in paint book: cherry red?) The strange thing is that the match is close enough to look like a poor respray match, even though they are actually deliberately a different colour! And the other ironic thing is that the original rear doors didn't match the front doors anyway, as you can see in the attached pic.

When I got the Uno it was brown-orange, so the original paint polished up to a totally different colour. I had some new paint matched to this colour - and it really does match. The bottom of the front door, the bottom of the rear door, and the rear wheelarch have been sprayed with this new paint... can you tell? :)

My problem now is the brown-orange bonnet that somebody painted with a colour they had matched to the non-polished paint! So, I wanted no-one here to make that mistake :)

EZ Alex,

Jobs a good’en. I can’t tell from your picture – Is the re-spray on the passenger - er right hand side (UK driver’s)?

Thanks for straightening up the colour match thingy lol.

Regards all – Louie Bee.

Louie (we meet again, I reckon we run this place ;))

The shot of the left side of the car (the left pic) is the passenger's side (we drive from the right just like in the UK). Bottom-left corner of the left-front door is resprayed. There's a paint blend at the top of left rear pillar.

Left-rear door is different shade of red, kinda stands out once you know what you're looking for! In fact I'm sure if I polish it a bit more it won't stand out as much as in that (wet) photo...

I'm going to sell this Uno in the weekend. In the flesh, the colour difference isn't really a problem! Or so I hope... heck, it's better than having RUST... and this IS a 1987 car...

Good Luck GS!!

Nice Job Alex!

Are you auctioning – or e-baying her? Good Luck however she goes. Should fetch top dollar! :D

My M8 (who had his escort robbed off the back) told me only UK and Japan drive on the LHS of the road. – That’s his explanation for the Japanese car auctions round England + why his MR2 T-bar was so cheep.

TBH for a moment I thought you’d converted from RHD to LHD.

Maybe I’d be too modest goes that far if it were true. Like you, I’m rich in time, (but) I have to cross town daily for only a few hours graft, so poor in cash. – Just one of life’s other tradeoffs… :)

Whats next on your project line then? Your still gonna keep your eye on us?

Regards All,
Louie Bee.
