ok my speedo cable snapped on thursday, went to fiat and got a new one as i didnt fancy havin a second hand one incase it didnt last as long. fitted it friday night and it worked fine. went to go out last night and it stopped working again!!

i have been out to the car this morning and checked that the speedo cable is fitting right, it was and both ends were on tight.

would i be right in thinking that it could be the speedo clock itself that is nakered?

benn and got a new clock panel and swoped it for the one in my uno, drove round the block...... no change

disconnected and re-connected the speedo cable, drove round the block.....no change

disconected the speedo cable and tryed spinnig it from gear-box end, spun ok.apart from there was no motion at the speedo end. pulled the "inner" out of the speedo cable and the obvious thing to happen would be for the speedo end to go "into" the cable, but it didnt......suggesting to me that it is broken in the middle?

am i right dya think?

Yeah the cable is just a piece of metal so if you pull it and spin it at one end and nowt happens at the other its impossible to see that it could be anything else except it has snapped!

Did you say it was brand new though!?

I would be tempted to think something is putting up quite a lot of resistance to snap the cable. If its anything like my uno, you could take the clock out and just push the end of your spare/old cable in and spin it around with your fingers. I honestly cant see what else could be snapping the cable. Maybe see if there is any difference between your new and old clocks?

yep brand new one, thats why i was so suprised that it had snapped.

im going to ring the place that sold it to me and see what they can do for me. maybe they will be able to get me an "inner" then i can just slide the broken one out and replace it with one that i can clearly see is NOT broken.

it wouldnt be a problem in the gearbox, would it? maybe something in there caused the new one to snap, although i do remember that my old one had been on its way out for some time!! maybe FIAT just sold me one that was a little bit dodgy?

I see what you mean, im not an expert, but logic tells me that it is unlikely that it is the gearbox end, as that is what turns the cable. If there was a problem at that end, then i dont think it would snap the cable as it wouldnt move at all.

I would put my bets on the speedo end, because that is where mine used to bugger up. Dont hold me to that though!

I reckon try and get a new inner bit, it just slides out of the plastic casing. Then try it with your new clock.

Good luck!

Phil
