Hi everyone,

Well, it's MOT time for me at the moment so a busy couple of weeks ahead . Given the age of my Uno (1992) I wasn't too surprised to find out it had failed (n), as various work needs doing (eg bits of welding and a new CV boot plus new front brake pads due to being contaminated by the grease), but one item on the list puzzled me a bit.

Near side rear wheel bearing rough as a dog, it said (or words to that effect :D). Funny that, as I'm sure the hub and wheel bearing was changed on that side about 3 years ago because of a rumbling sound. If I remember, the part cost about £25 from a local motor factor and came with a 12 month guarantee.

I checked out the Haynes manual to see if just the wheel bearing could be replaced, and found the following in chapter 7.4, section 6:

"If the bearing came apart during removal of the hub or the reason for removal was worn bearings, then the complete bearing/hub will have to be renewed as an assembly; separate components are not supplied. The bearing is sealed for life...."

Looking on eBay though there are various wheel bearing kits a lot cheaper than buying with a hub as one item, unless these are not suitable for my vehicle (details at bottom).

Wondering if anybody has had experience of changing the rear wheel bearing without having to fit a new hub at the same time (if possible at all), or whether I will need to get hold of a second hand bearing/hub through the forum or elsewhere .

Cheers, Andy

The guy that did my rear brakes the other day explained to me that it had a sealed bearing which apparently was a bitch... I don't remember why. He did say however that they are generaly very reliable. He didn't say anything about haveing to have to swap the whole hub assembly if one needed to replace the bearing. I'll gladly ask him tommorrow, his wife even drives an uno, so he is pretty familiar with these.

Thanks, it would be really useful to know one way or t'other as every penny counts! :)

The rear wheel bearing/ hub is a sealed unit. You have to replace the bearing/ hub as a whole. The front wheel bearings can be changed independently but not the rears. Bear in mind that the front bearings will require a hydraulic press to remove and replace, so by the time you've paid out for an engineering workshop to remove the old bearing and press in the new it would likely be cheaper to buy a new hub in the first place ;)

Or a hammer and a monster socket which is just the right size
