Hi all.
I spoke about my first problem in another thread, but decided to make my own.
My speedometer isn't working for 3 years now. Cable is apparently ok, but problem is in that small white plastic gear that goes into gearbox and spins the cable.
So, the gear goes into the gearbox, and the cable is fitted on it.
I need to find that gear for my '91 Uno FIRE.
Any ideas/links/even better offers are highly appreciated.
When I eventualy find one, we'll see about fitting it in.
I have old one, and I can post the picture of it, if needed.
Here is the sample picture, to get the idea what is the part I'm talking about (this is not Uno):
Ring%20and%20pinion%20small%20push%20away.jpg

The part marked with a red arrow is the piece I miss.
My old one is worn, and in the service they said it can't work anymore. Sadly, there are very few FIRE Unos here, and I cant find that gear here.

Second big issue is start-related.
Uno starts superbly with cold engine, no problems at all.
However, hot starts are usually a pain. I have really embarrasing situations at gas stations sometimes.
How come that hot engine won't start?
Anyone had similar issue?
He is 'spinning' just nicely, making noise superbly :D, it just wont "catch" it.
At the service, they told me the fuel pump is to blame. Like, it gets warm, and loses power. Replaced it to no result.

As said, any advice or ideas are greatly appreciated.

Otherwise, I'm satisfied with my Uno. Nice one, low-cost, and I have leather interiors and seats, decent 1.1 engine (low HP, but does job :)), and kind of rough suspension (don't know if that's normal for Unos).
Of course, there are more minor issues on it, but I'll keep it short :p for now...

Thanks in advance, see ya'll here...

If you don't get sorted I can probably get the part from one of the many Uno wreckers here for you. But you should be able to get that whole assembly from a scrapyard.

As for the warm start thing... how hot is that little black box on your distributor getting? I think I have seen similar complaints that lead to the replacement of that unit.

Hmmm... That would be nice.

Do you know what exactly is the part I need or do you want me to post a pic?

Also, please provide info on part's price and postage, if possible.

I live in Bosnia and Herzagovina-just eastern of Italy, across the sea ;)

And, one more question...

Is it known issue for fuel pumps (Uno) to get weaker while working?

My old pump seems to get weaker and weaker as I drive. Should I replace that too, and how much would it cost to send me a new one along with the first part I need?

Thanks very much, regardless.

Now that you mention the feul pump, it is listed as possible sources for hot start problems...

I'll give the local fiat guys a call for you.

I had to buy a new fuel pump once after it packed up on me going up a hill.

Cost about £40 from ebay I think, but I found that my old one (the one I replaced) still works fine...

Odd..

Ok, I Phoned the Uno place, they have the drive gear you are talking about for about USD16.00, expect shipping to be about 5 to $10 depending on the weight and size.

I do think you should take a pic of the gear as there is apparently a diffirence from model to model.

First of all, many thanks for your efforts!

I'm impressed.

Now, I'll post some pics of the part which I need. Here it is:

That's the infamous part I need. So, it's the gearbox side connector for Speedo cable. Uno, FIRE 1.1 '91.

Now, I have tried to figure out the key/square end of the cable. I am 99% sure I have square end, because it's square shaped :D, and I haven't noticed any key-like attachments. Also, I have no clue how the cable is supposed to fit onto that "gear".
Unfortunately, while trying to take a pic, I pulled the outer cable, and the wire itself disappeared inside. I think it's the right cable, here is what i came up with photo-wise:

Hopefully that's the right cable. As said, inner wire disappeared when I pulled it, but I'm sure it was square one.

Here is pic of engine bay itself:

You can see speedo cable at the top of the distributor (or so I believe).
Also, I'm open for any other suggestions/comments.
Huh .

Ucof, I have exact same issue. Going uphill is a real pain, and I think it's really gwtting worse as the car heats up...
Have you sorted the issue? How can I know if it's the fuel pump? I replaced it already with a refurbished one (obviously suspicious quality), to no result.
Since I don't feel like wasting 40, do you have any tips?
How do you know your old pump was good?

Shhheeeshh, thanks ppl. And sorry for length :)

Your pics are not showing, maybe one of the moderators can help?

The presure of the fuel pump can be tested by a garage. You don't always have to replace the fuel pump, it is seperated with diffirent thickness spacers, as it gets worn, a thiner spacer sometimes helps get the performance up. But you would idealy first want to know your pump is pumping too weakly.

The keyed cable has a round tip with wings

Ucof would be able to give you advice on the assembly, as it seems a kind of risky job as you may drop stuff into the gearbox as far as I understand. If the gear was working you just stick the cable in the hole...

Hmmm, pics show just fine for me....

Try No 2. :D

As for the assembly, after reading threads on it, I think I'll drive it to a garage.
Not afraid or anything, I just have problems with tech words, being an ESL guy.

Cool, I'll e-mail the guy the pics on Monday, he actualy asked if I had pics today, seems like a nice bloke.

Yes, you can post your pictures in the free forum gallery and then there won't be any problems with them displaying. Also remember that forum rules state that outside image hosting is not allowed here, so best use the gallery to avoid any future problems :)

Acknowledged, Chas.

Was searching for drivegear through weekend, no luck at all.
So, Hyper, please post feedback on dealer, if that fails, I'll have to post LFPart here in forums. Huh.

But, while searching for drivegear, I stumbled across SX speedo and got it for 10 euro:eek:!

Will need Louie's help for sure in days to come ;)

Sure is, Ucof :D
However, it'll all be useless without drive gear

And, I'm really scared by the upcoming work of fitting SX clocks in my standard (no revs meter) Uno...

Wish me luck  (and more importantly stay alert for LOTS of coming questions lol)

Like this one: does rev-meter work via speedo cable, too, or it can run w/o speedo cable?
And one more:
What does the Uno 'drawing' on the SX tachos represent?
Only tyre pressure or anything else?

Hay Up,

Yer bar 1,9 just represents the tyre pressure (y) nothing magic like low tyre pressure warning lights. The early SX pod had a check panel for broken bulb warnings but some say it was deleted as ti was rather troublesome.

Do you have a temperature gage near your original Speedo? If you have just the high temp warning light you will need to swap the temp switch for a temp sender to get the gage going.

It's only 1 wire to get the rev counter going but Ucof can take some clear new pics as mine are a bit fuzzy and I no longer have the Uno  https://www.fiatforum.com/gallery/showgallery.php?cat=637

If if you have the wing Speedo cable (pic above) I may have the drive you need in the spare gearbox I have in the garage ;)

i have already done pics!
Search for a thread called "parcel from louiebee"

:eek:D
(Louie sold me a set of sx clocks)

will reply in more detail tomorrow when i am not on my phone, in bed, tired.

It really is very, very easy. :)
https://www.fiatforum.com/uno/201002-parcel-louiebee.html

There are 4 plugs that currently connect to your clocks.
There are 4 plugs on the new clocks.
They go in exactly the same positions.

As for the rev counter, it is one wire that goes between the clocks, and the far right-most wire on the ignition coil (?) - it's all in that thread anyway.

Like this one: does rev-meter work via speedo cable, too, or it can run w/o speedo cable?

The rev counter runs off a wire, not the speedo cable - the speedo represents how fast the gearbox is turning, and the rev counter represents how fast the engine is turning.

Hope this helps.

I FOUND MY DRIVEGEAR!!!!

In the most unusual series of events. No time to post now, will post detailed info tomorrow.

I have temp gauge on my old speedo, so I guess it'll work without problems.

Thanks, guys, you already helped a lot!!

When I catch time, and weather allows (pretty bad this week), I will post pictures and feedback of work and upcoming problems.

One more quickie for now: since I pulled out 10+ drivegears today, am I capable of putting my new one in?
I'm not skilled mechanic:eek:, and I know there's risk of dropping it into gearbox . Knowing how hard the hole is to reach, do you advise me to take it to service or to attempt it myself? Anyone did it? Any tips?

Also, I planned to make white dials for my original speedo.
Any pics of the SX speedo with white dials?
It looks nice as it is, so I'm unsure should I make white ones...

Not sure if I'm honest - all I can remember when stripping the spares and repairs one we had was that it unscrewed from the gearbox. I don't remember having to play around inside it.

I wondered about this a while back too - Louie, are there any SX white dial pics around? I could try to do it. I'm just not sure how to do life size photos of things!
Also, I'm not particularly keen on ripping my clocks out, now that I have my entire car as I want it! :worship:
