1990 Fiat Uno 45 FIRE starting problems

Hi,

Can anyone help? I am a new driver and have had my 1990 Fiat Uno 45 FIRE (1L) for about three weeks. The previous owners hadn't used the car for a few months.

It has driven fine since I got it, however, it has become trickier to start . The engine will start, I rev it a bit and then it will just cut out as if the petrol is not getting through. On the third or fourth attempt it seems to get going and it is fine.

Yesterday it started to lose power as I was driving. I would have to put my foot down a bit more to keep it going, but every so often the engine would get back to normal and it would surge forward then feel as though it would die on me again.

Could this a problem with the fuel / air mixture?
Has anyone else experienced this sort of thing?

Any help or advice much appreciated!

Thanks

OD

Hei.

Does your car have a carburettor or an injection unit? I had some similiar problems with my Uno 1.1 i.e.S. As a result when letting my foot OFF the pedal (when driving) it got too much fuel, making it jump when I put the foot on the gas again. It actually got too much fuel when idling. Disconnect the air intake and see if the filter is very dirty. Then look into the fuel injection and see if some dirt (oil and sand) is clogging the valve down there making it pour too much fuel into the enginge when idling.

Morten.

Re: 1990 Fiat Uno 45 FIRE starting problems

Hi,
i am also a new driver, and have owned my 1994 Fiat Uno 1.0 i.e Start for a few weeks, and i am experiencing the exact same problem.we took out the distributer cap n noticed it was at the end of its tether. so i replaced it (which help it start a bit better) but it still does the lack of power while driving, then sudden surges of power. i was wondering if the adviced given so far in this forum helped?my step-dad is going to check the spark plugs as he said it could be that. i hope you get yours working!i'l let you know if the spark plugs needed changing.

od. Could be faulty ECU or ECU on the way out (thing on the side of the distributor that looks like a heatsink).
lynsey2006. could be perforated vacuum advance.

I had both these problems with my FIRE 45. New ones of each sorted out the problem.

Re: 1990 Fiat Uno 45 FIRE starting problems

i had a similar problem with my 97 Uno FIRE. the problem was with the vacuum advance, the pipe had a leak and also my distributor module needed replacement as when it got hot after running a bit, the engine would jus cut off.
