Hi guys,

Just a quick question - I have a mk1 Uno, 89 Formula 45 and currently have the R2 40/45watt bulbs in there.

I want to upgrade to H4 55/60watt, but just wanna check with you guys that these will fit without any modification as I know that the H4 bulbs have little bits sticking out which are used in modern cars to locate and hold the bulb.

i not know much about this but do later unos have h4s if so may be good idear to get newer lamps from breakers,

I just fitted Philips H4's and sidelights in my Uno with no problems.

Although, I think the original ones were H4 anyway? - I'll check when I get back home and let you know.

Hi there, yes you can put halogen bulbs in. I did mine recently in my 60S. Ask for H4 bulbs with the P45t base. These have the same fitting flange as your old bulbs and will fit straight in.

Bryan is right of course and has come up with the magic word "P45t" - I couldn't remember that bit! They have a large circular base, stepped, without the three tabs sticking out.

Some Unos (70SL, etc.) came with halogen headlights, and these cars accept the normal (common) H4 bulbs. For the more basic models, you'll either need to swap the headlights for those from an Uno 70 (etc.) or fit the special bulbs Bryan described, which are a tad more expensive and don't come in all the silly flavours (blue, silver coated etc.) which you don't want anyway if you just want your headlights to WORK.

One other thing, once you've got your better bulbs, ask us about fitting relays to get maximum voltage to the bulbs, and hence maximum light...

Just a few more questions:

Can I just clarify then that the standard H4 bulbs will not fit?

Is it possible to get a converter to fit in the R2 socket - i.e. a small piece of metal which will clip into place and allow a standard H4 bulb to fit?

That's correct, standard H4 bulbs will not fit in place of round 40/45W bulbs unless you hack the tabs about (and that risks the bulb being mis-aligned with the reflector).

I haven't heard of such a converter but the P45t bulbs are qute freely available and will be a worthwhile improvement.

Alex, how comes my H4 fitted straight with no problems?

Does my car basically have different head lights 'cos it's newer or something? Have I done something wrong?

I don't think there's any issue with my alignment though - I can certainly see a lot better at night than before.

Yes, your car has halogen bulbs because it's newer The headlights are different, they accept the three-pronged H4 bulbs, and no, I don't think you have done anything wrong, sorry for misleading you...

Actually my 1987 60 has H4 halogen bulbs as well, but markoibook said that his car had the 40/45W bulbs, which only come in one shape - not H4-compatible, so those headlights require bulbs with the P45t base. Or, of course, you can swap the headlights for the type that we have...

It is possible to get a H4 bulb converter. I got a pair for my Panda 4x4 and you could use any H4 bulbs you like. I fitted a pair of Philips Vision Plus H4 bulbs and they are great. I got the adaptor from www.2cvstuff.com.

Anyways, just to let you guys know that whilst I was on a weekend in France I spotted a set of Halogen bulbs from Philips, that replace the R2, and are 30% brighter, and at 12 Euro for a pair, not a bad deal indeed.
So i have since popped them in and can confirm that they are indeed brighter than the standard R2 bulbs, and also have a white tint to them, as opposed to the rather yellow colour from the tungsten R2 bulbs.

On the mk 1 Unos, the base models were fitted with non-halogen headlight bulbs, whereas the 's' models and higher spec models were fitted with halogens (H4?) Not sure if this is the same with the mk2 Unos, though suspect it is.

The mk1 halogen/ non-halogen headlights look the same, but the bulb fitments are different. However, the headlights are interchangeable so you can directly swap the non halogen headlights with the halogen ones. This will allow you to use halogen bulbs without needing an adaptor.

Check on Ebay as headlights often come up for sale, often brand new and for reasonable prices. But do check with the seller first as to whether they are halogen or not.

Wow, this was an old thread...

I actually had a nasty surprise when I went to upgrade my headlight bulbs to 100W:

1. Fitted old 1970s-FIAT relays with direct power feed from starter cable
2. Remembered to include in-line fuse
3. Wired the relay earths through another relay connected to the starter solenoid, so that the lights turn off during cranking, Alfa 164-style
4. Bought 100/90W H4 headlight bulbs.
5. Removed 60/55W bulb from driver's side, put in 100/90W bulb - nice and BRIGHT...

6. Removed 40/45W bulb from passenger's side... obviously, someone had replaced the other headlight with the 'S' type...

7. 'Stole' a headlight from my Uno Turbo so as to have two headlights that take the same type of bulb!

8. Unplugged dim-dip resistor, so that with switch in sidelights position, only sidelights come on (otherwise, there was enough voltage for the relays to kick in and give headlights at full brightness...)
9. Job complete... I now have the World's Brightest Uno Headlights! The difference is absolutely awesome, on a country road I can see roadsigns a kilometre away...

Oh - when I get around to replacing the Uno Turbo's clutch and windscreen... it won't be so hot trying to drive with a 40/45W headlight...

1 KM’s a long way!

I’m not too happy about new cars’ lights being excessively bright. I find the new LED / NEON brake and indicators lights dazzling – specially at traffic lights when the driver in front don’t use their handbrake…

Any Way, I reckon if you can’t beet em – join em…

I’m swaying back round to having the Blacked rear window with my smooth boot… Will help when I’m leading someone wi 100W bulbs.

MMM could I legally have all my mirrors tinted too?

I'm quite lazy (specially on Sundays)... does my mk2 uno tub have h4 bulbs?
going to buy a HID conversion kit as sick of not being able to see even 10 meters in front let alone 1km!! :yuck:

should be h4, however before you shell out on the kit, try the relay job that alex posted up:

Before you do this, bear in mind that retrofitting HID kits to older cars that don't have self levelling lights or suspension, headlight washers and lenses designed for HID's is contravening construction and use regualtions. You can be prosecuted for this if caught, and an MOT station can fail the car too. Try the AlexGS relay method first if you want brighter lights because these are legal I think there's a guide somewhere if you do a search.

not been pulled yet, had them in for nearly a month and been pulled over 2x about other stuff
get flashed alot by other people and mates complain because i blind them!
but they are mint
6,000k H4 single beam (dipped only)

btw if you upgrade to hids, change the sidelights from yellow! they looks plain gay!

yet, being the operative word, it's a harsh situation when you have to remove them roadside, and return your wiring to original before allowed to proceed, as well having to remove your tints, as more than one driver found out the other day...........
