Hi. This is my first post on this site excluding my intro in the Newbie Central.

I thought I would share with you my little project. I obtained this little 1988 45S from my neghbor who was moving last week. The car had been sitting in their garage for over 3 years and was looking very sorry for itself. It was about to go to the scrap yard. The brakes weren't working, the battery was dead and the radiator had blown.

As I have been on leave this week and keeping my 12 year old daughter entertained I got to work on the little Yellow Peril.

Well I recon its now ready for an MOT.

  • Replaced o ring on distributor as it was leaking oil.
  • Removed battery and cleaned surrounding area.
  • Sprayed oil on all dry areas of the engine bay.
  • Cleaned sunroof rubbers and lubricated.
  • Fixed rear nearside bumper mount.
  • Re wired and replaced stereo.
  • Re-connected rear window washer pipe.
  • Cleaned interior and Back to Blacked the bumpers, grill and mudflaps.
  • Treated areas of surface rust and touched in.
  • Degreased engine and WD 40’d where necessary.
  • Fitted new radiator.
  • Fitted new battery.
  • Replaced fuse.
  • Attached wires to rear parcel shelf.
  • Re-painted the sills.
  • Waxoiled underside, under bonnet, inside wheel arches and bottom of doors.
  • Fitted new wipers front and back.
  • Fitted new air filter.
  • Washed and Waxed bodywork.
  • Bled brakes.
  • Replaced pink pin stripe with red.
  • Fitted chrome strip to bonnet.
Theres no rot. The brake pipes and bushes look good. All the electrics work now I have fitted a new battery. It starts on the button.

Still need to change the rocker cover gasket and check the brake pads.

Still, not bad for nothing.

you gonna sell it? cos i like it :D

Im looking to run it as a second car for a while and may give it to my niece when she turns 17.

I was looking for a car to tinker with as I chopped in my Alfa and the wifes Ka for a new Focus Estate last March. There's not a lot you can do with a new car and I was getting bored. So this was ideal.

I have owned over 40 cars but never a Fiat for some reason. Having looked through this site and seen some lovely motors I can see that my next project could well be a Fiat.

Looking nice!

Any chance of pictures of the work you have done please?

Welcome to us by the way :)

You are so right about new cars, and these Unos are so easy to work on and get a good result.

I stumbled across Unos when my new Misti Lancer (late 80s) needed some work and I was loaned an Uno for a couple of days. I always wanted one after that, now I have 4!!

Great find, and you have a good little car there! (this is coming from someone with an uno thats given him nothing but headaches) But these cars grow on you!!! You may not want to part with it!:slayer:

Very nice Uno you have there and an excellent job you've done on resurrecting it (y) It's also great to have a fellow mk1 45S owner on the forum too to keep my 1986 45S company :)

I notice that someone has already done some mods to it as it has a Turbo tailgate and a mk2 rear bumper. ;) I reckon you should drop in a 1242 Punto lump to add some extra horses for very little outlay

Keep us updated of work you do to your little yellow beasty please!

It is looking good, its also sporting 126 Bis wheel trims!

I`d waxoyl inside the sills too as these tend to rust alot faster than the floorpans.

I cant remember ever seeing a Mk1 with a tilt slide roof! Does it rattle?

Only bit I dont like is the chrome & red bits round the grille!

You had a good result though!

Welcome to the forum

Great work there!
In an age of eight-year-old good-condition one-owner cars being scrapped for 2000 quid off a new car, it's nice to know someone cares enough to save an Uno. And what a great little Uno it is. I still reckon the Mk1 (a.k.a. series 1, original, pre-facelift) 3-dr with FIRE engine is everything an Uno should be.

As Chas points out, it has already had some tasteful mods - and as a73uk points out, it really does have some 126bis wheelcovers (flatter than Uno wheelcovers), talk about 'subtle mods' :p

Oh, speaking of 'subtle mods'...
You may find that this thread gets moved to an all-encompassing Members Motors section, where you get to show it off against every other Uno living and dead, but in the meantime I'm enjoying it being here where I see it. :)

It's interesting to see a yellow Uno. I would be surprised if that is the original colour? I don't recall ever seeing that colour as one of the options. 'Base'-model Mk1 Unos came in various solid colours like French Blue, White, orangey-Red, Dark Red, Kermit Green, Mould Green, Beige, and Black, with metallic paint optional (those aren't the official names). Models like your 'S' came with metallic paint as standard; usually silvery-blue, silver, dark grey, grass-green, or an amazing TURQUOISE SEA BLUE which deserves capitals because it really did stand out against the drab 80s metallics

There would have been a paint code sticker in the tailgate, but of course the original tailgate is now gone (replaced with a Turbo one). So perhaps you could have a look in some hard-to-get-at places - inside the heater chamber, for example? - to confirm whether the yellow is original please?

Cheers,
-Alex

Thanks for your kind comments. I didn't realise it had a Turbo tailgate and Mk 2 rear bumper. The car was rebuilt from the chassis up in 1996 and given to my nieghbor as an 18th Birthday present. Thats why she was reluctant to get rid of it and was very happy for me to get it back on the road.

The Chrome and red bits on the front corners are just to hide my poor paint work. I will take these off once I get a proper spray paint match. Its been painted in a Ford yellow.

I also need to respray the front arches as these have had some surface rust. The rears are fine.

I was suprised it had a sunroof. It much better than the normal popup jobs.

Ive also put a decent stereo in it so will have to get a reasonable security system for it.

When you have some time it might be a good idea to take out the interior roof lining and maybe the sunroof and check around for any signs of rust. Take off all the rubbers and even if there is no rust give the metal lip some extra paint and rust preventative oil or similar. Also give some extra paint cover around the inside of the roof back about 50 -100 mm from the sunroof opening.

While the sunroof is good, these cars have a foolish design for mounting them and they rust around the sunroof. I have 3 here with sunroofs in them, they all have the cancer around the sunroof. I will take a picture and post it. Oh, and on two of these cars I can find no rust anywhere else.

Thanks for the advice. I could do with taking the headlining out and painting it or something as it has the dreaded dust producing desease. I can have a good look at the roof then.
