Re: 0-100kmh (and fuel economy)

Well I had no idea there would be so much activity in this thread before I returned... :)

The two-way average of my tests (0-100km/h) is 20 seconds, though both times I was not terribly good off the line (engine bogged down for a moment).

What I am more interested in is that I went on to record a top speed of 142km/h (after correcting for speedo inaccuracy - I have done this using a radar speed trailer that was parked locally, driving past at 50km/h and reading 53km/h off the trailer's display. The inaccuracy tallies with my tyre size calculations that suggest a 5.67% difference - the car has 155/80s fitted instead of the correct 135/80s.)

Tonight I drove to Auckland (hour and a half trip.) I drove up at fairly high speeds, almost flat-out (125km/h on the motorway, at least). This was also in addition to a couple of hundred kilometres town driving. Average fuel consumption: 6.28L/100km (45mpg).

I brim-filled the tank and drove home at a steady 86km/h (corrected). The test distance was 145km (corrected). The fuel consumption was 4.67L/100km (60.4mpg).

WOW ALexGS....nice report..:D Thanks a lot for the info.

Here in Malta where I come from we only have Cities. There are no highways whatsoever, so basically you can only do city driving. This week I averaged for the very first time 40mpg!! which I think is pretty decent!!

I am gonna try and change my wheels now from 155/70 R13 to 185/55 R14. I hope I can find this type of tyre. But first I have to time my car properly on a proper flat piece of land without any extra weight.

I get my 0-60 about 17-18 seconds when the engine is running well but it can be sooooo sloooowwwwww when my engine doesnt want to behave.

Hey Turbo guys......I was thinkin...I think you can reach 200kmh right before I can get to 100kmh!! What do you think?? It takes me 20 secs to get to 100.Can u get to 200 in under 20 secs??? I think it could be really close!!

How much bhp do you have on your Turbos??

Well I have to say that before I read the times for the Uno Turbos of Dunc and Frosty, I decided to take one of my other cars for the same test, on the same road. The Alfa 164 is an auto, so I was prepared for disappointment - but it did the 0-100km/h in 8.5 seconds (y)

When I eventually get the Uno Turbo on the road again (with the new clutch from the living room floor) I must test that, sounds like it might be a close thing. Bet my 164's quieter and more comfortable, though :)

WWWOOOWWW! Talk about power. Wish I could experience it myself! THe fastest car I have ridden in had a 0-60mph time of 10secs and that's it. Also I can see a really big gap in performance between the 1.0litre and the 1.1 litre!! Impressive

The 1.0l engine puts out 45Hp, while the 1.1 one has 54Hp...which means a difference of 20% more!I guess the acceleration time will be reduced APPROXIMATELY of the same percentage:

1.0Fire....0-100 in 20"
1.1Fire.... 16" or less :)

0-150 km/h in 8.7 sec. :)

0-100km/h ~5 sec :)

My uno is not standard apart from cyl.displacement ie 1.3 l

Drinu,

Don't worry, power is not everything in a car... You will have a faster car one day (probably quite soon), but it will be worse in other ways, guaranteed. I bet that Dunc and Frosty would agree that power didn't come cheap, and neither did my 3L Alfa :) Well it's all relative anyway. Even if you had an Uno Turbo, they'd have a Ferrari or a Lamborghini, and you still wouldn't have quite the power to keep up!

uno jens, the famous 1600cc turbo creator! Yet you claim 1.3l?

Good to see you here on this forum... and it must be very interesting getting all that power to the road to get to 100km/h in five seconds. Do you go in a straight line? :D

-Alex
It is only 1.3l.
Standard bore 80.5 mm
standard crank 63.7 mm

I have not driven the car for some months now...
The engine will have a new turbo, manifold, pistons and so on..

Speaking of power. Usually in a petrol engine as opposed to a diesel engine...most of the power comes at the high end of the rev range. Well does anyone know what is the red-line of the 999cc FIRE engine??Is 6000rpm a safe red line limit??

Drinu,
The FIRE engine is probably a bit of an exception to the rule because (as I've written somewhere else on this forum) the cam timing 'strangles' the engine, preventing free breathing at high revs.

I think the engine bottom end is pretty tough and should go past 6000RPM fine, but you won't be getting much unless you have a reground cam from a cam specialist. I don't know if anyone has tried this but I would think there is a substantial improvement to be reaped by improving the cam, closely followed by the carburettor.
