Howdy
Can anyone tell me, does a battery from a mk1 1000cc go into a mk1 turbo, are the terminals the same?
Cheers

Generally battery terminals are universal.

You need to compare the CCA (Cold cranking amps) which is basically how efective it cranks the engine in cold weather.

Just make sure that the battery specifications are the same as the turbos original battery and the terminals should match up.

If the batter terminals are a bit small then get a sheet of lead and cut a piece out then wrap it around the terminal. This will take up the "slack". If the battery terminals are too big then (not recommended) you can "shave" some lead off to get them to fit, but generally the terminals are universal so should be fine.

Generally if a battery works in a 1000cc Uno, it will work in the Turbo. There's no difference in the battery tray or clamp, but the Turbo does have more equipment mounted around the battery.

The best new battery you can buy for the Turbo is - in NZ - a DIN55 battery. On these the terminals are below the top surface of the battery, so there's no risk of shorting on the bonnet, and the base flange is a generous size so it clamps into the tray properly. With the terminals away from you, the positive is on the left and the negative on the right. Best place to buy such a battery is The Warehouse - believe it or not - Exide Premium sealed no-maintenance costs $149.99. Although it's about 50% more expensive, you'll find it lasts far longer than the universal types from SuperCheap that have the removable cell covers. 'Sealed' batteries are not just ordinary batteries sealed-up - they also have longer-life plates and alloys designed to reduce gassing-off and therefore the need to top-up.

Cheers for all the info there. The reason I asked was I bought an uno in Wellington and have a battery here and wanted to take the battery with me to get it going and drive it up. Turns out it was cheaper (no breakdowns/tickets on the way up) getting it up on a transporter. $275 overnight which I thought was pretty reasonable. And I'm also not sure if you can take car battery's on a plane as hand luggage anymore...
