Fiat uno pacer.... carburettor model - 1400cc. These sounds are audible under throttle, steep inclines.... Could it be comming from the engine compartment or the gearbox? Any similar incidents out there ?

If it only occurs under the conditions you mentioned it could be 'pinking' or pre-ignition. This is where the air/ fuel mixture ignites too early, sometimes as a result of carbon build-up in the cylinder heads/ pistons causing hot spots or the ignition timing may be incorrect. Check the timing as if that's the easiest thing to check and adjust
