Question fuel tank cap lock - help

The ignition switch was acting bit weird lately, so decided to replace the ignition switch, the trouble is, the new "Magneti" switch is very very smooth, no spring action between AVV & MAR and no steering lock either !!!.

The mechanic suggested replacing all locks along with replacement ignition switch, except fuel tank cap(m2k black plastic one). The chances of breaking the lock pin being the reason he refuses to replace it and i don't want separate keys.

Can anyone post exploded view or "dummy's guide - how to" of fuel tank cap lock ?. I have searched Haynes UNO manual, no information about this item.

Thanks.

Re: fuel tank cap lock - help

My MK2 fuel cap didn't have a lock on it.
I had to buy a replacement from eBay that came with 2 spare keys that I use.

Sorry I can't actually help!

, How on earth you managed to put the cap on place ?, duct tape ?

I've kept the lock for fuel cap, if anyone posts a "how to". Any way, forgot to mention Ignition switch isn't available without the steering column lock( 35). Is it the same elsewhere ?.

I don't get this either. Here, every UNO sold have 5 doors and locking fuel cap and mine is a top end 1.7D .

You can not put a lock in the fuel caps, you need to BUY one with a lock preinstalled.

My UNO did not have a locking one, it had a plastic "handle" which you turned and that unlocked it but it never had a key because the locking mechanism was just turning it.

Just buy one from ebay or something, I'm sureyou can get shipping.

Like EssexUno said, ours just came with a plastic fin that you turned to open the pipe. There was no lock whatsoever on it.

I thought the same as Dunc as all my mk1 Unos have had locking fuel caps These included two base model 45's, my 45S, my mk1 70SX and a scrapper 70S. And yes, these were original equipment fitment because the same key for the ignition and doors fitted the fuel cap.

Must be a mk2 thing

Nope!!

My first Uno (1986 D reg) had a locking cap

it was my Gran's Uno and I also got a non locking cap off her too!! Which must have been supplied with the car.

I'm sure I have a receipt for the optional extra locking cap somewhere

*Chas goes and finds his 1986 mk1 Uno brochure*

*Comes back*

*Reads it*

Aha! Good point Louie, according to the specifications sheet it turns out that the locking petrol cap wasn't supplied as standard with the mk1 base 45 and 60 models, but was a standard feature for all 'S' models and upwards.

Strange as well in that my first 1986 Uno 45 had a locking cap as did a spares 1988 Uno 45 I acquired. Must've been an optional extra as you suggested!

Good question... to answer a simple question none of the other posters seemed to understand:

Fiat actually sell a whole lock set - all locks are individually replaceable on Uno's - the doors, ignition and boot locks has a little hole or lever to release the lock's locking tab/pin... the fuel cap has none (to keep it air tight? )

I'm going to skip the easy details of disassembly, you have to figure that out as it's quite simple.

Take the fuel cap apart. When you have just the plastic piece containing the lock, measure the distance from the cover plate of the new lock, to the locking tab at the end. Copy that distance to the plastic part and drill a small 1.5 or 2mm hole in the plastic part to obtain entry to the locking tab. (Drill in the channel as in photo) Turn the key/lock until you can see the locking tab inside and depress with a pin - pull lock out...

When installing new lock, look for the ramped entry point, the locking tab must enter in that channel.

Have fun!
