hey guys.

ive realised that i dont want anything else for the exterior of my car or interior so now its time to modify the engine. i want it to be faster basically, fed up of being overtaken and beaten at any lights i may come across. What modifications would you recommend to get for my uno which will make it go faster as its too slow at the moment. any ideas?

1994 fiat uno ie start 5door beast!!

cheers

Depends on how much performance increase you'd want to gain and also how deep your pockets are. If you've got a standard 1.0 litre engine theres not a lot you can do really except for maybe adding a turbo charger or superchip to make any significant performance gain. Not sure if they even do a superchip for the standard unos. These mods will cost probably more than the car is worth anyway so I wouldnt bother really, not unless you can do all the work by yourself. Aside from that a decent exhaust system and Air filter can help to get sum extra BHP. Good quality spark plugs also help. Thats about it really.

Cheapest way of making it faster is to put a turbo engine in, or just a 1.4 if the turbo insurance is too high.

Alternatively if you added better brakes and suspension the car would handle and stop alot better. This means you can brake later and go round corners quicker.

Sorry I disagree with the lot of you :-D

Cheapest way of making it faster - less weight.
Did you see the Top Gear episode with the Jag XJS?
Another way they used was nitrous...

Anyway, take out the spare wheel. Take out the back seats and rear seat belts. Take out the soundproofing under the carpet and inside the doors (stuck to the metal). Consider taking out the headlining, but leave the door cards in place.

Ensure engine in best possible tune, with most advanced ignition timing and highest octane petrol. Fit original-spec tyres (smaller and lighter).

Don't carry a passenger.

See, we haven't really spent any money yet... the car will be noisy as hell but you should be saving a second or so on the 0-60 time :)

Oh yeah and by the way, a lighter car doesn't require as much braking or cornering force, so most of the stuff about fat tyres is a myth if the weight is low enough.

Hey I've been driving an Uno 45 the last couple of days, and it's quick-as away from the lights against the 'average' Joe. I don't think you really have grounds for spending the cash (I'm agreeing with SteveC here, I see that he owns a Panda so I'm sure he's realistic about performance).

Sure if you want 'real' performance, you'll need to stump up the dough for an Uno Turbo or something similar. Those cars feel a lot faster than they really are.

But driven well around town, you should be able to make the Uno 45 performance suffice. And it'll still go over the legal speed limit on the motorway.

Yeah lose weight,

So get on a diet, remove all the seats (except driver), spare tyre, sun visors, little button for the horn, additional seat belts, dashboard and all the other bits of plastic.

And never drive with more than 1/8 tank of fuel.

Do that and you will get 0-60 in 15 easy.

Alternatively, source a 1108CC FIRE engine from somewhere.

Don't bother with the sport's air filters etc, the engine is too small for the standard set up to be causing any kind of restriction.

Depends if you want to sacrifice comfort for speed, to be honest stripping the car interior out will increase the 0-60 speed but by how much remains in question. But the question is will it really be worth it? I doubt it, not if you want to use your car as a daily driver. It all depends on what you use the car for. I'm also with Steve C on this one, there's not much point trying to make a 1.0 litre engine any quicker, it was never designed to be "Fast". I'd save my cash for a car with a bigger engine if i were you. Apart from that a full sports exhaust system, decent spark plugs and air filter is about as far as i would go in tuning a 1.0 litre engine.

Martiny - "Do that and you will get 0-60 in 15 easy" - <LOL!>... Maybe 0-30 would be more relevant and exciting :)

FRO$TY - Keen camshaft grinders should be able to improve on the awful profile of the FIRE's cam (it has *negative* valve overlap which means that both valves are closed for 3 degrees of the crankshaft's rotation, killing any chance for the engine to scavenge and therefore preventing any noticeable difference from big exhaust/better air filter. Nothing too wrong with the standard airbox anyway (a friend tried circuit racing with and without it - no difference!).

I reckon with double-barrel carb, tubular inlet manifold, and custom grind camshaft, the high compression and cross-flow head should be good for at least 70bhp. The dual-downpipe exhaust is the same size as on an Uno 70 so it should go the distance as well. But emissions may be an issue at low/medium revs, and fuel consumption will probably suffer.
