Hi all,

can anyone think of a reason that the gearbox on my 1.3 n/a wouldnt fit my turbo engine? (later top change box)

would the clutch off my 1.3 n/a fit to my turbo engine?
cheers,
matt :)

The 1.3 n/a gearbox will fit, yes, but as you suspected the ratios will be different. It also won't be as strong as a turbo gearbox, plus it will be missing the split driveshaft (on the drivers side) that is used to combat torque steer caused by the greater power from the turbo engine.

I'm not sure, but the n/a driveshafts/ inner tripods might be different too so it's not just a case of fitting turbo shafts and hubs.

I'm fairly sure the clutches are different too, the turbo might use a bigger item compared to the n/a 1.3.

Wouldn't it be better to use the gearbox from your old turbo, or did that get damaged in the crash?

thankyou for your concice responce (y)

I wanted to use the n/a one as the box has a really nice feel and has had minimal milage on it.the UT box wasnt damaged in the crash, but 3rd gear syncro is at that first stage of being on its way out...if you know what i mean...where it crunches less than 1 in 100 shifts but it puts that nagging thought at the back of your mind.(n)

The racer has a cerametallic clutch, and the clutch on the ut, although fairly new, was slipping at 1 bar boost.

also the linkages on the ut box were rubbish - no biggie here, but that, and the clutch slip to me say that the last owner or two had been ragging the car a fair bit, and so if i could use the nicer box it would be easier/ less likely to go pop (and less work when converting :p) or that there is friction plate contamination which nobody likes...
cheers
