The seam sealer took a lot longer than I thought it would to apply!!

I know what you mean! Is this sealant squeezed out of a cartridge - if so, I found it's difficult to get a standard look, but it helps to 'tool' it - shape it with a flat blade or maybe even a plate with a notch cut out to give a square-edged profile.
Alternatively, 3M have a seam sealer that comes on rolls - like a strip of blu-tack, probably similar to that applied in the factory (and we know how well that worked ) Check with your paint supply shop - I doubt that 'frauds' would carry it

I'm looking forward now to my next engine-out full paint job - it just looks so clean and satisfying compared to working around what's there.
