alright people, just having a few electrical probs at the mo with my UT ;) its really starting to hack me off!!!!

i know what the probs are but don't really know what i'm doin when it come to electrical crap!!

firstly, my fuel pump doesn't always work. i found that if its not working i just get out the car and wiggle the wires underneath the car next to the fuel pump and keep trying this till it works again. how do i go about changing the wires? or is it something else?

secondly my battery light has suddenly always started to stay on even when engine is running. now i know this is normally due to the battery not charging so how can i resolve this? is there some areas i could check or is it time for a new alternator? if so how much are they?

apart from thses two things my UT has been the most reliable car i've had! no probs what at all! really can't have my car off the road for long as i've got my MOT in about a week ;)

whys everything suddenly happened....gutted please help

Hi Dunc,
had similar probs with electric fuel pump on standard Uno which intermittently wouldnt work(never when running however). Eventually traced it to bad connection to Ecu which is prone to moisture oxidisation on this pin. Try disconnecting and giving it a clean. Worth checking your pump relay as well. Light sound like alternator-get output checked before condemning though problem might be linked.
Good luck
Nick

lol try the earth on the feul pump m8 cos mine corroded n it burnt mine out which then cost £135 so try to re-earth. buy a new battery maybe bit old or a new alternator+check runnin belt on alternator see if its slipping this cud cause lack or charge. try these mate mite help.

gotta love the uno's

battery is only 2 months old and its an uprated HUGE jobbie :D

connect a test lamp first to the pump relay output to the pump and give it a try it will tell if fthe prob is in the wiring in case the pump stops working but the lightis still on.For the alternator connect a volt meter between battery terminals and see votage difference with engine off and engine running,it should read 14.7v aproxx, engine running

cheers anton, i'll give it a go tomoz :)

next week hopefully, get the uno sorted this weekend with a little look :D

Did you get your turbo sorted Dunc?

I'd suggest like Anton did and connect a test lamp to the fuel pump connnections. If it stops working but the lamp stays on then the fuel pump is at fault. Otherwise it's a wiring problem. Might just be corroded terminals on the pump, so take them off and clean them up. That might do the trick.

And did the battery light coming on problem happen at the same time as the fuel pump? It is possible that the ECU is sensing a fault and shutting off the fuel pump. However, that wouldn't explain why wiggling the wires gets it going again.

I'd put my money on the fuel pump playing up or the wiring/ earth being corroded.

I wouldn't have thought that a replacement alternator would be that expensive because I don't think the Turbos are that different to the standard models (maybe a higher ampage output). You could always take it to a place that reconditions them which would be way cheaper than buying a new one.

The battery light staying on is nearly always a fault with the alternator. Probably one of the diodes inside it is allowing current to flow both ways.

Hope you get it sorted, and let the board know how you get on.

alright lads, cheers for ur comments.

i've sorted the fuel pump, it was a little dodge wiring which i sorted no probs :D

as for the alternator, its getting looked at at my mates dads garage cos its there for a MOT!! oh no!!!

so it should all be ok by the weekend ready for santa pod the weekend after and ULTIMATE STREET CAR WOOOOOHOOOOOOO :D

Good to hear your Turbo is back on the road Dunc!

By the way, your standing quarter mile time is only about a second down on a Ferrari Testarossa! I remember the Ferrari's time because a few years back I had a Kawasaki GPz550 that did the standing quarter in 13.1 seconds. The Testarossa was 13.5 seconds. Kind of cool to know that I had a vehicle that could out accelerate a Ferrari! Up to about 100mph anyway, after that the Ferrari would leave me for dead.

I also had a Yamaha YPVS 350 that apparently could drop into the 12 second bracket on a good day. Never did get a chance to run it on a quarter mile strip so can't confirm if it could or not.

Now I'm relegated to a 1.0 litre Fire engine that does the quarter mile in about 21 seconds. Hmmmmm!

hmmm, not all fun and games :(

unos not on road yet and theres less than a week ahhhhhh!!!!!

right heres whats wrong but i can't do anything about till i get it to the garage!

1. won't start and when it does it sound like its running on 3 cylinder! (checked plugs etc can't see anything wrong)

2. alternator not charging battery (garage goin to sort cos its a pain to change the alternator on a uno turbo cos its at the back next to the turbo!! handy!! [:p]

3. loose connecter on top of fuel tank. the guage wire (easily fixed, i'll do it tomoz)

4. need new connecter on back of the ignition barrel as it looks like its burt a little?!?! hope i don't go up in flames :O the garage is goin to fix this :)

5. looks like i got a fuel leek where my fuel regulater is hmmmm. i'll get the garage to look at this

6. got some welding that needs doing and the garage is goin to do this

7. garage is then going to MOT it

8. buy road tax

9. hopefully whack on my FSE boost valve, turn the boost up and be ready in time for pod!!

if i'm not ready for pod then i'm goin to cry :(

Does anyone know why the connecter on back of the ignition barrel burns...same thing happened to my car. I had a problem a while back when all the internal and external electrics wasn't working and pin-pointed wires to this connector. wiggled them about and all electrics were back!
