Hi all,

As I'm new here I'm curious to know what age and model Uno's everyone drives.

The Uno came out in 1983 ('A' reg), and I wonder if anyone has one this old? From my experience the first two model years of production didn't seem to be very well rust proofed and I haven't seen any this old on the road for years. However, from 1986 to 1989 'C' reg. to 'G' reg. there still seem to be a fair few nice ones left. I also notice that a lot of early mk2's rust badly, but after 1991 they seem to be better protected. Does anyone else notice this?

For the record, I have a Uno 45 S 3 door 1.0 FIRE with carburetor, first registered in May 1986. I bought it off Ebay in March of last year for £46! Apart from rusty door bottoms (common Uno problem) there is virtually no rust on the car at all, though the paintwork had oxidised badly. However, I'm going over it with rubbing compound and T-Cut and it's coming up pretty good.

I managed to replace the passenger door with a rust free one in the same colour, also bought off Ebay for £11. Still looking for a rust free drivers side door in 'Rosso' red.

Oh yes, it only had 62,000 miles on the clock and a stack load of service history and receipts. It has great fuel economy and manages to get just over a 100mph (downhill I hasten to add) on the speedo. On the flat it can hit about 90mph, but the best thing is the way it can cruise at 70 - 80mph all day. Pretty good for an 18 year old 1.0 hatchback!

It's not the first Uno I have had, my previous one was also a 1986 45 FIRE but only the base model. Took that up to 105,000 miles when I traded it in for a Citroen 1991 AX GT. Though the AX was way quicker and handled better, it just didn't have the character of my old Uno. It also had the build quality of a KitKat wrapper, and even though it was a one owner/ low mileage car that had been looked after it seemed to be falling to bits around me. It also started using oil and water (valve stem oil seals and head gasket problems, well known faults on the AX) I sold it while it still looked good and ran well, and bought my second Uno as mentioned above.

I'd also reached a skint point in my life (again!) after working abroad for a while, and needed to get back on the road as cheaply as possible. As I knew the Uno 45 FIRE model really well and still had a load of spares, it was my first choice. With my budget I didn't have much of a good selection, near dead Metro's, rusted Nova's/ Fiesta's or terminally boring Micra's. A Uno it had to be, and when a good one one came up on Ebay I bid up and was surprised it only sold for £46. 10,000 miles later and I haven't looked back.

I love my Uno to bits as it's fun to drive, easy to work on, mechanically simple and quite tough. It's also dirt cheap to run, parts are plentiful and also cheap, and it has bags of character. Though by now I ought be driving something more modern and upmarket, I get a real kick out of driving an 18 year old Fiat that still looks in good shape. I also feel a little smug when friends with more modern cars get huge bills because of things like the airbag warning light coming on, ECU modules failing and costing £600 to replace, ABS pumps failing and being a garage only repair job. With a reasonable tool kit I can fix or replace just about everything on my Uno myself.

Anyway, enough of my car. Does anyone have an older Uno than mine? I suspect most on this forum have mk2 Uno's, though I wonder how many people have a mk1? What is the story behind you getting your Uno, and what is your general view of it? Would be interesting to hear from other Uno fans.

Oh yes, I'd love a Turbo, but until I get myself out of debt I'm happy to stick with my 45. Still, at least I've got something to aim for!:D

alright mate, i got a 1990 G reg mk2 uno turbo 1.4i.e. one of the first mk2s.

I have a 1995 1.0 start, one of the last ever Unos to be made. Quite a few mods on it now and more to come...

I have a standard (well, apart from immobiliser, alarm, CD player and rear speakers) 1.0ie Uno Start, 1994 M reg.

I have a UNO E reg so whats that er 1988 maybe. 990cc FIRE!

However, it might upset you all to hear that she is now my secondary car as I use the punto mostly.

She does still have her original battery though!!!! and exhaust!!! it's flippin marvelous! On the downside though, only half the car is red now, the other half has faded and is orange.

and he said to his himself, "wow! what was that thing, it went like a blurr. I wish I had a Punto".

just re read your post you sent mate 1986uno driver, i was too tierd to read it all first time round. I have a 45s 990 FIRE uno as previous post says (look up the screen).

I have been told that even though the car works like a dream and runs like one has only 70k on clock and is brill underneath and in engine for age it WILL NOT pass it's next mot as the chassis is too weak on the bonnet and the roof.

Therefore i will probably be willing to get rid of it too a good home just prior to mot so you can rip her apart. (making me emotional this is)...sniff

Hi all, just found this site :)

Currently driving a '89 60S (seems underpowered, can get up to 150kph - bout 95 I think - under 'favourable' conditions, but takes a very long time to get there!). Any tips for improving the performance, short of fitting a Turbo engine, would be very much appreciated!

Cars v. expensive here in DK, it cost me £800, even with the rust in the doors. Came with 2 years MOT though :)

Past Uno's I've owned:

'86 60S - (UK) - gave it to my sister when I moved to Denmark, last seen on a street in Tulse Hill..

'87 70SX - (DK) great car, lowered suspension and very quick. Bit too much rust to bother trying to MOT it again.

Also had a '91 Croma 2.0ie, one of the best cars I've ever driven. After I'd had it for a month, stopped in a queue on the motorway, but the Volvo behind me didn't..:(

Numero Uno!

I'm driving a '88 uno 60, with 60s gearbox, MKI turbo alloys, sideskirts, wheel arch flares and steering wheel. It also has 40mm lower springs at the back and 30mm lower at the front. cd headunit, 250wrms amp, 12" sub.

good fun to drive, but slow as anything.

Damian, you could drop in a larger engine to get some more performance! Check out the posting in the forum titled 'Uno Engine Swaps'.

Same applies to you Slinklinks Matt, as you can fit a larger engine to your car as it has the non FIRE engined 1100.

By the way, it seems I have the oldest Uno out of everyone here? Surely not? Does no-one have one older than May 1986 'C' registered??????????

Hi guy's, i've got a Mk1 C reg 45 S black with 14" alloys, stunning engine, and a Mk2 45 Fire red, with abarth alloys, cobra fixed back's and sparco harness', no back seats, sony explod headunit, and 6x9's mounted in the rear quarter panels, you know the side bit in the back??:), and a OMP turbo exhuast.

I got a White Mk2 L reg 94 999 Fire with the uno turbo alloys, Scorpion bike exhaust, pioneer head unit, JBL 6x9s, 600w Crysay amp. Waiting on clear indicators, turbo side skirts+arches.

Hey Karlhunt666,

Welcome to the owners of the oldest Uno club! Do you know what date yours was registered? Mine is also a 'C' reg 45S, first registered in May 1986. And like yours it has a cracking engine. Cruises at 70 - 80mph and can hit 100 mph down hill. Not bad for a bog standard 45 hp one litre!

It's pretty much standard, very little rust apart from the doors though I managed to replace one. I've fitted a 70 SX instrument pod with tachometer and also the clock/ map reading light from an SX/ Turbo. It also has an SX steering wheel.

Has a cheap and nasty stereo that came with it, but the good thing is that it has a booster amp and four speakers. Two 6 x 9 Pioneers in the back quarter panels and two Boschman speakers in the front door panels. Nice and loud and didn't cost me a penny.

Plans are to refurbish and fit a set of Fiat X19 alloys I picked up for £25, but other than that it's staying cheap and cheerful.

I love it for what it is, and considering it only cost me £46 it's been a fantastic little car.

By we all know on here what great cars the Unos are!

Chas

Hey, 1986Uno45S,

No don't know of the top of my head when it was first registered, will check when i get home tonight. I won't to get the instrument panel for my fire, but every time i go the scappy not one bloody uno!!! Well not the one i won't neway. [:(!] Your's sound's in good nick mate, the main problem with mine mine is the brakes are hammered. The left side just doesn't want to work and the right side work's then stay's on and binds. i've replaced everything apart from the hose's and servo. thats calipers, discs, master cylinder, pads. This means i don't get to drive the 45, only the fire at the mo, at least it's staying clean ;)

Hi Karlhunt666,

Sorry to hear about your Uno dying, but hopefully some advice I can give here might still help you and also others.

I won't to get the instrument panel for my fire, but every time i go the scappy not one bloody uno!!! Well not the one i won't neway.

Try contacting this guy. He often advertises on Ebay and seems to have a stack load of Uno spares for both mk1 and 2. I bought a mk 1 SX instrument pod off him for a very reasonable price. I'm sure he may well have what you're looking for.

[email protected]

Also keep an eye on Ebay as instrument pods sometime come up for sale. I bought a mk 1 turbo instrument pod for £4! I haven't fitted it yet as the SX pod looks good and only needed one extra wire from the coil to get the tacho working. Other than that the SX pod was a straight swap for the original.

Your's sound's in good nick mate, the main problem with mine mine is the brakes are hammered. The left side just doesn't want to work and the right side work's then stay's on and binds. i've replaced everything apart from the hose's and servo. thats calipers, discs, master cylinder, pads.

I had a similar problem on mine. The nearside caliper would sometimes bind on, and other times the piston would stick meaning the pedal sank to the floor before the brakes worked! I whipped off the wheel and found that one of the pads was nearly down to the metal. The other three pads were fine.

What I did to solve the problem was this:

Removed the brake pistons and cleaned them up with Autosol. The nearside was particularly grotty.

Wire brushed all the sliding surfaces of the calipers and also the caliper holding bracket. There was a lot of rust on the caliper holding bracket. I also used a file to make sure the surfaces were nice and smooth.

Also check that the 'wedges' that hold the caliper to the bracket are clean and rust free.

Then I reassembled it all with new pads, using liberal amounts of copper grease on all the sliding parts. DON'T use normal grease as it melts due to the temperatures generated by the brakes. Only use liberal amounts of copper grease as you don't want any to come into contact with the calipers or disc.

Once done, I now had non sticking brakes that were also a lot more powerful. Good news indeed, and the only cost was £6 for a set of brake pads and a couple of hours work.

I know this might not be of help to you because your Uno has been murdered (!), but it might help others with the same problem.

Thanks for the info '1986Uno45S'. I've replaced almost every thing that i can with the brakes (disc's, calipers, master cylider and discs) so I was going to try changing the hoses to flexi-hoses and see what happend. Well that was until the over night[:(!]
Thanks neway man.
