ok, all was ok then started knocking a little, then it got worse and to a point where didnt think id make it home, it also made the steering wheel wobble side to side and pull to the left at some points. wasnt as bad when let off throttle
the problem went away when in neutral or the clutch was in so thats why i think gearbox/diff,
its now jacked up but cant see anything wrong and everything is tight,
any ideas?

D/Shaft spider collapsed / worn into diff , jack up rotate wheel back and for and u should hear knock from g/box / diff area. if it is that will need to remove d/shaft and fit new spider, also remove box drain plug and use a magnet to try and get all roller brgs out of gearbox to prevent future damage to g/box
Just saw was turbo, sorry, sounds may be diff collapse even

just found that its ok when cold/short drives, will be having a better look tomorrow,

so what if the diffs collapsed? new gearbox?

I had a similar symptoms with a Cinq. Turned out to be a shagged gearbox :(

Have you checked to see if there's any oil in the 'box?

Also check the driveshafts as Mal126 suggested. It could be a knackered spider joint or possibly the intermediate bearing in the drivers side driveshaft.

The noises you got from the gearbox were exactly the same as those in my Cinq when it failed. You might also find that the vibration and/ or symptoms come and go when you change gear/ push clutch in and out. My gearbox had a cracked main housing so it didn't have any oil in it. Check your oil level and if you've no/ little oil then you've probably got a dead gearbox

I blew the diff in my golf a while back and that clunked and knocked, check the oil and see if its silvery, with lil metal bits, also have you checked the driveshaft intermediate bearing for play Ant!

got a new gearbox, the oil was like new when i took the old box out. will see when i finish fitting the new box if it sorts the problem

ermmm, still not sorted as i snapped a sensor so waiting for a new one before i can test it
