Hi all. I seem to have a problem with a newly acquired Mk2 Uno 1100. The cars gear change doesn't seem to be in order. I initially assumed that it was the gearbox, (a 5 speed hydraulic box) which did have some trouble but on replacing it with a 4 speed hydraulic box (the only box i could find that would fit) I noticed that gear change problem still wasn't rectified. I am totally clueless. Any help would be appreciated. The problem is when I put the gear lever into 1st, the gear lever has got to actually hit the dashboard before it engages. In other words gear change is difficult and my wife just can't drive the thing. Please help. Thanks

I would inspect all the gearchange mechanism from gearlever to gearbox and check for wear, especialy gear linkage rods, and selector mechanism on top of the box, has it been put back together properly? do you have a haynes manual (bible) always comes in handy Ant!

Hi. I have inspected everything and all seems to be ok. Someone suggested I open up underneath the gear lever and inspect. Does this make sense? Do I open from inside the car or from underneath?

I'm fairly certain that the mk2 has the gearchange rods from the lever to the gearbox on the inside of the car going through the bulkhead/ firewall. You will need to remove the center console to see them.

I also totally agree with Ant in that it sounds like a linkage problem. You need to check all the joints and plastic bushes from the lever to the gearbox as it's possible you may have forgotten to replace one or more when you changed gearboxes.

Does the gearlever feel 'floppy' or does it seem to have excessive movement compared with how it was before you changed the gearbox?

Hi. There is no centre console in my car. There are no rods inside the car.
All bushes on the linkages checked. All seem perfect. The only place I havent checked is at the lever as I don't know how to and I cant seem to find a way to check there in the bible. The gear movement is the same as it was with the old box i.e floppy... Thanks guy for tryin to help!

Can't get new linkage so problem still exists. Car will most likely be sold and replaced with something I can understand like a Golf MK1. Thanks anyway.
