hi i have a fiat bravo and am converting it to run a single wiper at the front. ive found an uno with the motor i need. how do i remove it?
i assume i will need to take the windscreen wiper out and then remove the plastic cover?
i was having a bitt of a struggle with it at the scrap yard. any tips?

how do i get the wiper off?

cheers.

Lift the small cover at the base of the wiper arm, there is a small 10mm nut, undo that then fold the wiper up and the pull it off.

Next undo the really big nut which you will now be able to see, it goes around the shaft of the wiper motor. I generally use a cresant spanner for this job so dont know what size it is.

Next remove the weather strip from a mk1 or the entire plastic cover from a mk2 (lots of screws and some sticky stuff). Then undo the two philips head screws (these can be a bit tight, be careful not to shear them).

Now the wiper motor simply comes out of the car (remember to disconnect the wiring).

13mm :)

You mean a 'Crescent'! The English don't use that term, it's called an 'adjustable spanner'. ;) The actual size is 21mm.

Then undo the two philips head screws (these can be a bit tight, be careful not to shear them).

Also be careful not to chew-out the heads - they need a big Philips screwdriver (No. 2).

Or pull harder :)
I think on the Mk2 the windscreen washer reservoir has to come out first.

Anyway I just rebuilt my wiper motor the other day. My advice: don't bother. Mine now has a lovely new bearing and all three new brushes - but it doesn't go any faster and makes a louder whine than ever! :(

If you are pulling the wiper motor from a scrapper and the two Philips screws won't undo, then you could always use tin snips to cut it out of the scuttle panel then worry about undoing the screws later...

Actually I used a similar technique once at the side of a river where I found a dumped FIAT Cityvan (Brazilian Uno van). That was a long time ago - eight years, so I was 19 and desperate for Uno parts as mine didn't have a bumper at all. The front bumper bolts on the Cityvan were rusted solid. But a cold chisel got part of the wing off OK. I think these days I would have thought more about the legalities...
