hi. hopefully i am not repeating another thread here(i did look) and hopefully someono out there can help!

my mrs has a 1995 1.7 diesel uno and it rocks. she absolutely loves it and in her deluded state has decided to name it beautiful. christ.

anyway she is learning to drive in it and i wasnt in the car at the time so details are shady. she was reversing with no drama. stopped and went to change into first but the gear lever has gone really sloppy and she couldnt find first. i came to the rescue and had a look.

if you imagine pushing the lever to the left or right in neutral it should spring back to the centre when you let go. it wont do that now. also in each gear location a gear can be selected but its not what you expect. i drove it home and i think i found 3rd and 4th.

i had a similar fault on my lovely golf gti track car and it was a broken gear linkage so i suspect the same but it appears ok (it was pissing down at the time though!!)

any ideas from you lovely people??

i need to get project £30 back on the road!

cheers

Sounds like a linkage problem to me. Almost certain one of the rods has popped out, or one of the bolts/ nuts has worked loose allowing the linkage to flop around.

First of all you need to check the rods (they might be cable as well on a 1995 model) from the gear lever to the gearbox. If all is as should be, check the bell crank mechanism if it has it. This is bolted onto the gearbox and connects the gear lever rods to some addition rods on the gearbox itself.

Also check that the gear lever itself is still connected securely! Fingers crossed it will be something simple like that.

Good luck!

thanks for that. i had a look last night and one of the linkages has popped off. put it back on and.....it popped off again! dont know what else i should have expected really!!

any ideas how to get the other end off, where to get a replacement and how to fit? i'm assuming they just pop on. just a bit worried as there doesn't seem to be a lot of room down there!

There's a couple of different linkage designs on the Uno. I'm assuming it's the most common type, which has two long rods - one to the base of the gear lever and one to the clevis-joint (U-shaped supporting bracket) of the gear lever.

Then I'm also assuming that the rod has come off at the engine end?
One rod attaches to a rigid bracket bolted to the transmission - this is just a fixed support. The other attaches to a bell-crank. The piece that's come off is just pressed onto a ball-pin?

You can obtain a pack of replacement bushes, cheaply, from a FIAT specialist (they're made by an aftermarket company). If you use a pair of vise-grips (Mole grips?) you can squeeze the old bush (a dark-red colour) out of the rod end, and put the new one in - though it is quite hard and inflexible. Heating it may help.
