Going to look at a '98 S Ulysse at the weekend. It is the petrol 2.0 16v EL

The milage is currently at 75k, unsure if the cambelt has been changed. When should they be changed and is it a costly job?

Thanks

if its not been done, you probably shouldnt even drive it tbh, could go any time.
What rubbish! While it would probably be overdue, on a car with 60000 mile cambelt changes, a cambelt doesn't snap at 600001 miles, or 61000 miles, or necessarily 100000 miles.
Likewise it's quite possible that it could snap after 1000 miles. It's all a matter of probability.

What you need to do is make sure you give it a good test drive. That way if the belt snaps on the testdrive it's the seller's problem! :p It'll probably last long enough to get you to the garage for that imminent change :p

yes but on a car which the changes are at 60k, it could go at 40k if its a town car sitting in traffic alot, you dont know do you!

That's precisely my point  What point are you trying to make? That you should never drive a car, because the cambelt can go at any time?

Luck of gaz says it bursts into flames when he puts the key in the ignition! :p

my point is, if your buying a car, you dont know if its been sitting in traffic etc, and you dont know how the car's been treated, so if its not been replaced recently, get it done asap!

I bourght an R reg model S with 38,000 miles on the clock and changed the cambelt regardless at least then I knew I could forget about it, I always have cambelts changed when buying used cars as a precaution.
