Wonder if anyone can help me

My Ulysse 53 JTD Eleganza has just failed its MOT due to the fact that it needs new front discs and brake pads.

I've been quoted £220 + vat by the garage and I've no idea if this is a reasonable quote or not

Would welcome any comments

Thanks

Noel

That's interesting my 53 JTD failed on front brakes and pads also after only 16K.

Fiat Dealer quotes £260 to do the work, I got them done at a local Ford Fastfit for a £160 - so you could probably get it cheaper, however I was quoted more than £300 by some independants.

It's worth checking why they failed the disks.
Oftent as the pads wear the disks down a lip appears on the outside edge and this can grate against the calipre. If the disk isn't scored badley or worn beyond the minimum thinkness. It's quite possible to grind off the lips as they form and have MOT passes and save a fortune.
We had that same thing on our Uysse. fiest MOT less than 20K on the clock and faield MOT on worn front disks.
jacked up and checked disks were not worn to min thinkness (there is a flat on the edge to indicate it) ground off the lip that had fomred with an angle grinder. Car then passed the next 4 MOT's without a problem mounting up 60,000 miles.
This is an easy money earner for the garages. Watch out for it.
The questions should be: are the disks worn to less than the minimum thickness? Are the disks badley scored? (some scoring is fine)
Are they warped? (This is very rare)

Mine is a 2.2 JTD on an 05 plate and I can buy the discs for £30 each and a set of pads for around £25, check with Autoparts (yours may be cheaper), if you fancy doing the job yourself.

Its fairly straight forward for the average diy car mechanic.

Definately worth shopping around for quotes. Have just had front pads/disks quoted for on my Hyundai, Kwik-Fit quoted £235 inc VAT, local independant quoted £203 inc VAT and Central tyres Quoted £140 inc VAT. Huge saving for half an hour of driving around asking for quotes!!!
