General to add or not to add?...ADDITIVES

Hi guys,

over here in Malaysia there are many products available as additives for the engine, claimed to protect and/or prolong engine life and/or improve power output and/or reduce fuel consumption, etc., etc., etc.

i've actually used one of the products b4 and at least felt a smoother power delivery (mind you, it was added to a 5+ y.o. car with 100,000+ km on the clock).

i'm coming up to my first service for the ulysse and i think they'll likely use the selenia synth engine oil. do you think an additive (for engine protection + power enhancement) will do any good in the long run for my 4-pot 16valve 2litre petrol ulysse?

Hi,

Personally I do not run any additives in any of my cars purely for one reason - I only use quality fuel to begin with [which purports to contain detergents, etc] - either Shell diesel in the Fiat and Shell optimax in my other car. If no Shell, next choice would be BP Ultimate for both types.

Apart from that, can't really comment on pros or cons of other additives. Sorry!

Use the same fuel here back home, it claim to have more mileage for the same amount of fuel, compare to others.

I use Shell (petrol) too...it's called "V-POWER" over here (don't ask what that V's for). It's a premium 'strain' and costs 1.50 Malaysian Ringgit to the litre (methinks that's like 22p/litre or roughly a quid for a gallon).

reason(s): many, but one of which is the rewards program that Shell participates in and I'm a member of.

back to issue at hand, i'll stay off the additives for now. the engine's still new and i don't think it'll make much difference, yet.

22p a litre - aargh.......

Shell optimax, which I think is about 98RON compared to the normal stuff at 95RON, is about 85p a litre in my town. Diesel for the Fiat comes in slightly cheaper!

I think you are right to stay off additives - car too new!

If I was paying for my fuel I'd be jealous

Mind you I get stung in tax instead, but it costs me a lot less that I'd have to pay if I paid for all my private mileage (and it's a set monthly hit regardless of how much I use the car)!

hi all,

well, look at it this way guys, ya win some ya lose some. not sure if one is to do a life cycle analysis, who'd come out tops. my hunch tells me that i'd probably come up a little more worse for wear...(due to higher capital outlay).

in the end, life's more than just wheels alone.
