Hi

97 2.0 petrol EL
Following threads yesterday regarding cutting out at low revs and the culprit being the icv despite the car behaving itself i took the valve out cleaned the plunger and head with carb cleaner and replaced. Some one said you then turn ignition on for 90 secs then off for 90 secs then on for 90 secs then start and let idle until fans cut in. Some sort of reset mode? The car refused to idle at all so I took it for a run and it was worse than ever. As soon as the revs dropped they kept going down til they disappeared.

When I cleaned the valve I accidentally moved the plunger back up into the body by a bit and then pulled it down again to what I thought was the original position. After the drive I wondered if i had pulled it to far and it was somehow fouling the body so I took the valve out again rechecked it wasnt at its fullest extent and then refitted.

I restarted the engine which didnt idle but rev from 1500 to 2000 to 1500 to 2000 on a cyclical basis ..up and down.I left it running in this weird way until the fans cut in the went for drive.Total nightmare..didnt cut out just reved up and down.

When i say i moved the plunger this was a very gentle action and it seems to move ok.nothing was forced.Could this cause a problem. Any ideas?
How exact does this 90 min business have to be?What could cause the engine to rev itself up and down like this ....sounds like someone is flipping the pedal!!:(

Hi All

I have the identical problem. Haven't tried this 90 sec reset procedure but certainly will.

Hi seanb

I put that on the forum at about 5pm having turned the car off in disgust.I had to go out at 7.30 and was dreading the journey. Upon start up the engine rev up to 3000 and then.......settled back to 1000 rpm and then back to normal 850/900!!!!!!!!!!!!!I really dont understand this system as I am a carb man slow jet/main jet etc ..simple. I think maybe as I moved this plunger the ecu was trying to find its working position by moving it up and down and thus causing the reving. The on off business is telling the ecu to reset I suppose. So assuming I have fixed this:rolleyes: to summarise what I have done.
1/A vacuum pipe from left hand side of black chamber in front of throttle body leading up to sensor high under scuttle end split making joint leaky.Cut off damaged part and reconnected.Had to reroute pipe as now a bit shorter.
2/Cleaned out main air filter then squirted carb and injection cleaner into it as engine running gave it a good soaking.
3/Put strong mixture of redex in tank. The cheapest as you get 4 goes per bottle for £7
4/Removed idc and cleaned with same stuff when refitting make sure o ring is seated on the engine first and end of plunger not fouling seating.I think I moved it out too far when cleaning and when refitted to car it was bearing on the opening inside.Maybe it cant operate like that.Torx screws here so I used bit extender with torx in end turned by a small 6 mm spanner due to lack of room.
5/Turn ignition ( not code)on / off/on each for 90 secs then code and start.
Think I heard a click from the idc at this point .Engine then revved up and down till fans cut in.Then turn off and leave.
2 Hours later it had reset and was ok.

This all started last Friday when the yellow light was on and I was on the way to fill up.I normally have about 10 ltrs reserve but I assumed it was lower and the power drop off was related to lack of fuel in the tank.
Hope all this helps.

i wonder if any ulysse owners dont have this problem i have ,cleaned all the pipes last august with a piece of string with a rag tied to it soaked in carb cleaner no problems till now but guess what early christmas prezzi its back and too cold to play at machanic so i have it ticking over a little high for the time being i wonder if there is a peugot 806 and a citreon forum with the same questions and answers.all that said i would still have the ulysse [great family bus].(y) happy christmas to all
