Hi everyone,

I had an airbag faut when I bought the car a few weeks ago (2004 2.0 petrol) and just had the car in for a service and asked them to have a look at the fault.

They told me the fault was due to a faulty seatbelt and the whole drivers side seatbelt assembly needs to be replaced at a cost of around 300 pounds. I live in Sweden, where everything is expensive, but this really seems a lot.

My Swedish is terrible and they explained this to me over the phone in a mixture of english/swedish, but pretty sure they said the whole seat belt assembly. Having had a quick look at parts on e-per, I couldn't see how the whole lot would need replacing.

They also told me that the drivers side airbag will activate correclty in the invent of an accident but that they couldn't re-set the warning message without the repair being done, so I don't have to get the work done. So I've got some time to think about it.

Just wanted to try and find out if this is a common problem and/or if getting the whole seatbelt assembly was necessary.

Any thoughts?

Many thanks

If "Airbag Fault" is the message on the RT3 display, it's not going to be the seat belt - much more likely to be the seat belt pre-tensioner/s. I know as I still have this fault on the L/H side of our 2003 diesel. See if you can find the pre-tensioner item on E-per? To replace it is a bit of a pain as they are at the bottom of the door pillar, kind of attached to the belt retract mechanism. IMO your garage is being lazy. Do they have diagnostic Peugeot/Citroen equipment? (the Ulysse is a Peugeot really.)

Hi Brittleware,

Thanks for the reply and I nearly PM'd you about this as I saw on a previous post that you've had some airbag problems in the past and was going to give you an update on the instrument lights too.

The place is a proper Fiat service place, so I would assume they've got all the right kit. Yes, the "Airbag Fault" message is on the display screen. Maybe it's the pre-tensioners they meant then. I'll get them to explain things a bit clearer when I see them next week.

About the illumination lights, I took your advice and tried to get to the stalk on the steering column but only got as far as taking the steering wheel cover off and wasn't confident enough to try and get to the wires in the stalk. By complete accident though whilst doing that I turned the headlights on on the stalk and the illumination lights all seem to be working fine. So it definitely looks like a wiring fault on the stalk and I'll get them to sort it out.

Thanks again for you help,

Glad you're getting there!
