General dipstick

General dipstick

I don't think there is a dipstick on the Ulysse auto box. I believe there are two concentric plugs located on the bottom of the auto box and a filler plug on the top. The outer of the two concentric plugs on the bottom of the gearbox, I shall refer to as plug (1), has a tube attached to it and the length of this tube determines the oil level in the gearbox. The inner concentric plug, which I shall refer to as plug (2), when removed, allows excess oil above the level of the tube attached to plug (1) to escape.

The procedure for checking the auto box oil level is as follows:

1. Drive the vehicle so that the gearbox fluid reaches normal operating temperature.
2. Remove the protective shroud under the engine.
3. Remove the filler plug on the top of the gearbox and add 0.5 litres of hydraulic fluid.
4. With the engine running, put the gear lever in "Park" and release the hand brake.
5. Put a tray of some sort under the gearbox to collect escaping fluid.
6. Open the inner plug (2) slowly and allow excess oil to flow. When only a drip remains the level is correct.
7. Stop the engine, tighten plug (2) and replace the filler plug on the top of the gearbox.
8. Refit the protective shroud.
