PLEASE HELP DESPERATELY (damsel in distress)
i have a 2005 fiat ulysses eleganza 2.0l 16v, petrol, the power steering pump has given up the ghost and it is stranded some distance from home, i have a mechanic who will replace it for me but i cant seem to get the part, ive found 2 places that stock it (refurbished) but each time i go to order it they ask for yet more information, originally all they needed was the reg no. then they asked for the width of the pulleys???? then the part number (having explained u cant read the part number) then was it engine or body mounted, then with or without a fan.
please can someone help i am not a mechanic and do not profess to know very much about cars, but i cant afford to pay a mechanic stupid  prices just to tell me these datails (even though i cant get the car there).
if it helps i know that it is engine mounted, surely it cant be that difficult or am i just being blonde, does anyone know what part i actually need or are these guys on the phone treating me like an airhead.

thank you in anticipation

Hi Natty,
I can't offer any advice as to which pump you need but it sounds like the differences are fairly fundamental. How about getting a few pictures of the pump and sending those to the supplier. Hopefully they'll be able to match it up from the picture.

If you can't get the pictures yourself then ask the garage. A couple of decent phone cam pictures shouldn't take two minutes to take.
The garage is probably just as keen to get you sorted as you are. They won't get paid until the job is done and a dead car on your forecourt is a PITA.

Welll they need all that info so you can get the right part...just to make you an example ulysses have 5 different sizes of auxiliary belt!! So knowing what size are the pulleys will help identify the right one... maybe try to phone a fiat dealer/garage and ask what power steering pump is likely to be fitted on your year ulysse or like spannerdude says get some pictures. Hope this helps

If you post your vehicle's VIN and/or RPO number (this is normally on a label near the driver's door pillar) forum members may be able to help. For a 2.0L petrol Peugeot 807 (basically the same car as an Ulysse) the power steering pump on earlier cars had a pulley and was driven by the same drive belt which drives the alternator. From around RPO 10717, the power steering pump changed to a unit powered by an integral electric motor. This unit is not attached to the drive belt in any way and looks entirely different from the earlier pumps.
