Hi,

i need to replace the alternator on my 2004 ulysse 2.0 16v jtd.

i have limited funds after paying out for the glow plugs to be replaced a fortnight ago and the wife's not best pleased.

how easy is it to do yourself??

i have been quoted obscene amounts by the garage to get this repaired, however i have found a used 1 on ebay for a more reasonable price.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FIAT-ULYSEE-S..._CarParts_SM&hash=item4aa17681ce#ht_635wt_905

says its from a 2.0 scudo 2.0 16v jtd. will this match up to my car

Also if anyone has any documentation they could send me on replacing the alternator from a manual, that would be greatly received.

Thanks again

Take out your own one and get it reconditioned, at least then you will know what you have. Its a bitch to get out so you only want to do it once, a 2nd hand one may not be any good. There is quite a bit of work involved, taking drive belt off etc and it is very tight to work on. I think there are posts on here somewhere to guide you.(y)

They are ok to take out if you take your time, bit tight as digger says, there is an Alternator on ebay, come out of a Ulysse 2004

(Alternator was taken from a Fiat Ulysse 2.0 JTD Eleganza 2004 in good condition and working when removed.
Valeo 96 463 217 80 CL115 2542893A TG15COLO 404063908)

starting price of £70 bit more expensive, but darn site cheaper than new.

thanks for responses, i think i will try and remove the alternator first. and am considering recon, if affordable.
i have downloaded a ulysse workshop manual and i think this will help to do it.

it says to remove power steering pipes, do i have to remove them, or can it be done without.

if there is, what is the best way of doing it.

thanks

i haven't got very far so far, i cant find a tool i need to adjust the the drive belt tensioner.

in the description it is called a box wrench, but cant find it anywhere.
is there another name for it, i really only need a 1/2inch square end socket, but cant find that either. its marked as 1b in the image, i have lots of star end sockets but not a square.

thanks for any further assistance.

Hi there

As long as the spanner is the correct size and you can get enough leverage to push/pull the spanner and relax the tensioner you should be ok.

Use a 1/4" drive socket extension, that fits, when released, tighten bolt on tensioner bearing keeping tensioner away from belt so you can get the belt off. Hope you can understand what I am on about

hi i did mine over christmas with a recon one cost £96 , you need to take the oil filter off to slide the alternater by it and out through the top of the engine bay be careful not to damage the rad , not much space at all 2 of the bolts to the alternater are behind the oil filter so no option but to take it out , to gain access to the other side of the alternater take the plastic inner wing cover off , and in front of you will be all you need to get at , there a small metal bar bolted to the 2 parts of the chassis take that off to get to the 2 other bolts , as for the tensioner just put the right size socket ( think its a 17mm ) over the bolt head and with the ratchet turn it anti clockwise it wont loosen the bolt just lift the tensioner enough to get the belt off
hope this helps

do you still have to put a metal peg/pin in it when releasing tension???

and when re-fitting, is it the same in reverse???

thanks

thanks to everyone who has replied to help me. :worship:

i am pleased to announce that i have finally replaced the alternator and so far it is working without problems.

so thanks again. (y)

i did, it was a right bugger to release tension, but i think it was just seized a bit.

in end not the hardest of tasks to do.

thanks

Hey sands did you remove the alternator from the top or from underneath? Have to do mine tomorrow morning. cheers

i took it out from the top, had to disconnect power steering, i made a mess.

I have to do mine!

Looking at it you guys seem to have all struggled behind the radiator.

Is it not an easier option to remove the radiator and perhaps save disconnecting the power steering?

The alternator does not significantly charge at all, although reving the engine does increase the voltage from say 11.8v up to say 12.3v so the alternator is giving a small output. Am I right to assume the alternator is "faulty" rather than not receiving some kind of external excitation?
