Hi All

First post to forum. Spent hours reading though :)

Please could someone offer advice on replacing gear linkage cables.

I have a W reg Ulysse 2000EL JTD which has been very expensive recently (new clutch, dual mass fly wheel, fuel pump) and this weekend the gear linkage gave up the ghost. No more garage bills, so I've order up the replacement cables. Has anyone done one of these before? ANythink to watch for? The linkage that has gone is pretty inaccessible (can't select reverse) so I'll have to get it from underneath it will probably be working by feel alone. Am I right in thinking they just push onto the ball joints or is that too easy?

Many thanks in advance

Are you sure the cables are gone? I couldn't get reverse but it was the reverse interlock on the gear lever itself, small piece of plastic broken off at bottom of gear knob, does the gear knob turn round? Have a fiddle with this area first(y)

Hi Digger

Thansk for response.

I will check this but I'm pretty certain it's the linkage. The cable is detached from the gearbox. I tried pushing it back on but it just pops back off again :(

I think it's left part of it on the actual ball joint as there just seems to be a cap left on the end of the cable.

Have you ever had to swap out the linkage?

Thanks again

Sounds like you are right, never had to change cables, take the plastic bit off the ball of the linkage and put it back in it's housing, then try and press on again. an old trick for worn ball joints like that was to wrap elastic/rubber band around to stop it jumping out, works as temporary measure!

Swapped out the linkage today. Actually feeding in new cable more of a pain than removig the old one. Fitting the new rubbber gromet (already attached to linkage cables) was the worst bit. I had to dismantle some of the lower dash board and now the odometer/milomenter is blank. Very worrying :(
