Hi all, bought the above Eleganza model 3 weeks ago, lovely car, everything we needed - till i got in it last Wed evening to find it would not start....... No warning lights, codes or anything else..... Recovery firm managed to get it started so i could drive the children home (using someting i think they called "Power Probes"), by-passing some wiring somewhere in-between the ignition and starter motor i think they said. Next day they came and loaded it up and took away to my local garage, who have spent best part of 2 days doing tests on it but say its like the whole car has shut down - they cant gain access to any of the on-board computers they say that should talk to each other, or indeed them and their diagnostic testing equipment. Have been told they will be back on it again tomorrow but i am wondering if any of you kind folk can offer any hints or tips on where they should be looking??????

I have power in the ignition, but the starter is not turning over at all.

Car has had all re-calls done, and has been serviced on time, every time at main dealers, its been well looked after as far as we can make out.

Half term holidays is not a good time for this to happen!

Any help would be much appreciated

Just spoke to the garage, still nothing. The general view now is its probably a prob with the immobiliser. Any ideas? Thanks:bang:

Mine keeps saying immoboliser fault randomly, but usually clears itself if it's left for a while. From what I could understand when I spoke to fiat, the immobiliser is part of the ecu, and if that goes then it's a new ecu, but don't quote me on that.

Mine does not say anything, thats the problem! Would not be so bad if it would tell me whats wrong! Shall let the garage know tomorrow, i have a feeling this is going to be very expensive........ Thanks for your help, though!(y)

(n) Always at the wrong time?!?! Get the garage to check the fuse box (one under the bonnet drivers side) Water gets in here. To check it fusebox has to be removed and opened up to check circuits.Does it turn over but not start? Good Luck

Thanks Jarred! I shall let them know tomorrow to check that out. Its not turning over at all, i have a full ignition (radio, lights, seatbelt unfastened warning, etc) but something is stopping the starter motor from even trying to start the car. No previous problem with trying to start it, always started first time every time. Shall keep you posted....(y)

We had a similar problem on ours about a year ago, it just stopped starting for no reason and wouldn't even try to turn over. I don't know if it's the same problem we had but get them to check the alternator. Our fused completely and locked up everything, but as soon as it was removed from the system, the car started first try. It's worth a look.

I'm sure this has probably been done but has the battery been checked? When my battery started to go I had some strange behaviour including the immobiliser stopping the car from being started. Then the whole car shut down with no interior lights dashboard lights etc. The only way I got the car to attempt to restart was by removing/replacing the battery terminals then it would try to start before shutting down again. I replaced the battery and everything went back to normal.

sounds like it is either the battery.have they checked for power down to the starter and for a ignition feed could be a bad earth

They said the first thing they checked was the battery, in fact they lkaughed at me when i suggested this! Also said about the alternator in case that had fused, but as of yet no reply. :bang:

Really not sure what seems to be taking so long, all I know is i'm probably going to end up with a huge bill for hours worth of supposidly looking at and checking potential problems, its been a week now - what could be taking so long if it is something as simple as battery, wiring or alternator probs? (n)

Only thing they have not said they have looked at yet out of all your fab responses is the fuse box option, although maybe they have and just not told me.

My patience is wearing thin!

Thanks all for your help though...... shall report back in once i know any more, and if anyone has any more suggestions then please feel free to let me know(y)

Little up-date... Garage called to say they could do no more with the car, and only option is main dealers(n)

Called recovery back to recover me (surprisingly enough!) to Fiat's, only for them to send the sam man out who came out to me the night it first died, and to the astonishment of the garage..... he got it started again! (y) So i drove it to Fiat, followed by Mr Mechanic, booked it in and by chance had the pleasure of being able to speak to the technician from there, along with Mr Mechanic, and the general thought is why did it take a week of another garage not being able to do anything when the fact he got it started straight away again using his power lead means its probably not as major as first thought!

Anyhow, fingers crossed its in there now, its nothing too major and shall be back in my posession again very soon.... as ever i shall keep you all posted:)

 Hope you didnt pay the last garage?!?!?! How embarrasing that the recovery guy fires it straight off?? Sound like he ran a lead from a positive supply to the stater relay or starter with the ignition on once its running as long as you dont stall it keeps running perfect. I would check starter and starter relay. Main ignition fuse circuit and starter cuircuit. Cant be imobilser it only interupts fuel pump and ignition circuit so if you bypass ignition circuit it wont run cause the fuel pump wont pump fuel. Good Luck and if your in Kent i know a good main dealer.

The guys from 1st garage just looked in amazement, I wondered if it were that simple how many of them actually know their job that well at all?! And no, i definately did not pay them a penny! Was getting worried i was soon going to get charged storage fees for a car that would go nowhere, lol. Now the end is in sight i really just want it back on the road, and you are right Jarred, once it was started it ran fine, could not stall it as its auto thankfully;)

Am over the other side of the murky river, but not a true Essex girl, just happen to live there now in Romford! See what service i get from my local ones (Glyn Hopkins, Romford), and let others know if they come recommended.:peace:

:) Know a dealer in Romford used to sell alot of theEx addi lee ulysse might be able to help you out. Hes like the AA "very nice man" Has his own repair engineers???

Thats great Jarred, maybe you wouldn't mind sending his details over so that i have them for future reference? Fiat have diagnosed a fault in the wiring loop, its being fixed as we speak so hopefully after 2 long weeks without a car it shall be coming home later today, with any luck (y) Shall let you know when the happy occasion occurs! And thanks to all of you for your help!

:) At long last the car is back, its been a long 2 weeks! Cost almost £300 as of course the main dealers would not do anything without running a diagnostic test first, even though the recovery man told them what the prob was, but never mind, could have been a lot worse! Only trouble is where they have messed around with everything I cant figure out how to re-set the clock and its driving me mad, not to mention confusing the children! Have searched through my handbooks but cant even find a section on how to set time and date..... sorry to have to ask but does anyone have any ideas? Thank you all!

I'm sure your system is the same as mine in which case go to the main menu (on the control by the gear stick) and then I think it is the last icon on the right, the one that shows an F and I think a GB. From here you can select international parameters or something like that and here you can set the time.
