Hi guys i have a 2002 ulysse 2.0 td, 60.000 miles and never been thrashed, anyway i got to work today and theirs a weird noise coming from the engine, it sounds like a tapping but also a blowing noise, if i pop the bonnet and look at the engine, on the top of engine on left hand side, the end injector right at the back, their is a sooty powder on it, also on tick over you can see and smell exhaust fumes and when i slightly rev the engine it calms down but on driving it sounds like a bad tapping noise again.

My boss recons its a loose glow plug and thats why its blowing and sooty but the noise is a weird one guys and im worried and unsure, Has anyone got any idea's at all, i never heard of this problem before and until i did a load of motorway miles it didnt make it before.

Could a loose glowplug cause this, and why does is sound like a tapping when clearly its gotta be exhaust related due to the smell of fumes and slight visual fumes and soot, thanks in advance..

Loose glowplug sounds the culprit.
If it is loose obviously exhaust gases are going to blow by into the engine compartment, so you are getting gases and noise as the engine has lost its seal.

A very easy fix if you can get a tool to them.

Pete

Hio Pete,

Thankyou for your reply, yow much a relief it was for you to confirm that for me' I was worried it was something different.

It wghts all this week after working 14 hour shifts its gonna have to be a mobile mechanic to fix this one for me, or can i buy a special spanner and do this myself, if so any idea where i can get one from and how much.

Thanks again for your reply, very good of you to help.

hi mate am a engine builder for the m.o.d sounds like you have a loose injector or glow plug, hard to say without looking best to check all the glow plugs and injectors.

heater plugs ant to be about 20/25 nm and injectors about 70/75nm if you find that the injector is loose take it out and replace the sealing washer as it maybe be damaged, hope this helps you mate:)

Hi guys a quick update, i got to work tonight and thought i would try the rac and ask them if they could do it, anyway they turned up and its injector number 1 at fault, they couldnt do it as a pressurised system to 600 psi, he recons its gotta be a dealer, so thats me off work till a garage can get me in to fix it, no idea how much this will cost but i bet this ones not a cheap quick fix.

Thanks to all that replied i thank you all' but other option now is to px for that ford galaxy and keep my job or wait till this is fixed and loose my job, catch 22 or what?.

Just an update for anyone else searching as I know this is an old post. I've dropped my 2.0 jtd ulysse off at my local garage today and as I drove in he said 'you've got an injector blowing'!

The tapping noise and diesel smell in the cabin is apparently down to that although he'll sort that tomorrow, it went in today for lower suspension arms and a cv joint as the car was obviously not serviced or looked after at all. Should be a good car once these bits are sorted :)

Trying another garage- original garage 'didn't want to do it' due to lack of space??? Having a laugh! Trying another one wednesday, need to get this fixed, clothes stink of diesel fumes after being in the car. I know there isnt a lot of space for me, who doesnt know much about cars but was surprised to hear a garage say this. Has anyone else had issues changing injectors?

You should be able to reach the bolts which hold down the injectors by removing the cabin pollen filter housing. To tighten them you will require a 7mm allen key. If you are lucky (and you have not been running your car for long with a leaking injector) your injector seal(s) may be OK and you may get away with just tightening the bolts on the leaking injector. Be careful not to overtighten the injector retaining bolts.

If tightening the injector bolts does not fix your problem, the injector will need to be removed and a new seal fitted. Removing injectors is often a major problem on Eurovan diesel engines. This work requires specialist tools/expertise which most garages (Dealers included) do not have. I suspect your mechanic is aware of this and is reluctant to tackle the job.

Thanks for the info, I'll see if tightening works, failing that it'll be in the garage as planned on Wednesday. Only had the two weeks, proving to be a bit of a money pit. I do want to get this fixed though as it'll be a nice motor once this is sorted.

That's the problem with these cars - there are more being broken on Fleabay due to snapped cam belts and faulty injectors than crash damage!

The cost of fixing engine problems often outweighs the value of the car or it is often the last straw for owners who have had a bad experience with the Eurovan2.

2nd garage said that it is 'chuffing' but ever so slightly and not to warrant to possible 2k bill on new injectors, sealing washers and labour costs of dropping the engine. If he can get the injectors out of course. So....... have no choice but try and make the best I can out of the situation and so far a new pollen filter, and driving around town with the heater in recycle air mode works as far as the smell inside the cabin is concerned. Only had the car 6 weeks so not throwing money this quickly.

Under the bonnet, it doesn't look to bad. I do see the occasional exhaust cloud, but as you know you cant see much in there. I may take what I can out at the weekend and start chasing the egr pipework just in case that isnt on correctly. Nothing would surprise me with this car, I have replaced so much broken and neglected parts so far!

As a matter of interest, did you try tightening the leaking injector with a 7mm allen key?

No I haven't, I cant feel one and need a pointer as never worked on a diesel before. I'll remove pollen filter housing again this weekend as this is getting replaced and fortunately the dirty injector is the one at end so with the pollen filter removed there should be more room and light.

Thanks for the advice once again, would be nice to get the car running as near to 100% as possible. Just had DPF additive fluid topped up by local garage only for them not to be able to clear the message. Plus, having only 1 key, just bought new keyfob and blank from ebay with intention of buying fiatecuscan and tackling keyfob programming and message clearing given the advice on this forum. £42 for Fiat to tell me keycode over the phone! I wish I had this database! Lol

Hi

There are two bolts with Allen key heads either side of each injector. You should be able to reach the three injectors nearest the gearbox end of the engine quite easily. I had a slight leak on one of my injectors about 10K miles ago. I found, on the leaking injector, that the bolts were not even finger tight. I have had no further problems after tightening these bolts. I had to go to a tool supplier to get a 7mm Allen key, as this size is not always included in standard sets. Even if you can't see the injector bolts, it is possible to insert an Allen key into them by feeling around the base of the injectors.

I also tightened the bolts on the injectors which were not leaking and found these to be fairly loose as well.

Good luck.

Fantastic, cheers for the info, I'll check everything this weekend and hopefully get the family bus running a little smoother and cleaner in the cabin!

Thanks again for all your help

Had same problem on mine it was the end injector under the coolant header tank local back street garage sorted it said it was a pig to do but only charged £80.00 a lot better now thought it was a glow plug for months but just a bad injector seal.
