Hi, I have a 1999 1.9 tds ulysse the problem with it is when i start the car the racket coming from the engine makes it sound like a tractor it seems like the noise is coming from the diesel pump.i had the car about six months everthing was fine then it started and oh boy did it start. the problem is when i start the car the rev counter doesnt budge then i switch the car off fire it up again and it sounds normal sometime i have to start the car a couple of times to get rid of the noise this cant be good for the car so has anybody got any ideas what the problem could be.Any help would be greatly appreciated.:bang:

I likewise would be interested to read anyones replies on this thread as our Ulysse....sorry, the wifes :worship: Ulysse sounds just the same. I start ours up and let it tick over for a few seconds and it the seems to quieten down....I have just been asuming that this was because it had not been treated well with its previous owner and that it was taking a bit longer for the oil pressure to build up. With this thought in mind I give it regular oil and filter changes, but if anyone else has ideas...lets hear them (y)

Hi,
I have a similar problem and I am putting it down to a rough idler pulley on the auxillary drive belt, I am going to change it soon and I will let you know. Look and see if the tensioner spring on the pulley is jumping a lot, mine does until it warms up a bit, especially bad on cold mornings sounds very rough. Good luck

Hello there,
I have just changed the idler and tensioner pulley and all the rattling has stopped especially from cold start up. I notice that the tensioner pulley no longer jumps a lot on start up, treated it to a new belt as well. Seems to have fixed all my problems at least. I cheated a bit as I bought new tensioner and idler kit for my '03 JTD and swopped old bearing onto 1997 tensioner then repacked the idler with grease, anyway it worked.

Hi, I had this problem and took it to my garage, they changed the pully tensioner and showed me the play in it... if you look down the drivers side of the engine you will see the pulley (its the bottom one I had changed) The mechanic used a screwdriver to prod the pulley and it had some play.... Hope this makes sense.

we had a noisey idler pulley on out 2000 JTD, it eventually fell off. Boy are they heavy without PAS!

If you suspect the deisel injector pump, then remove the aux drive belt, start the engine, and see what it sounds like.

If its the pump, then it'll still be making the noise, of its stops then look on the aux drive belt lines.....alternator, drive belt pulley, PAS pump, AC Compressor (if fitted).

Anyone know if the valve clearances are hydraulic? Could explain the tractor on start up that settles after a short time. Common on GM engines that use hydraulic tappets.
