Hi guys,

Sometimes I get an anoying error in my Nav screen saying "ESP/ASR Error" (actually "Storing ESP/ASR" since it is in Dutch) with a beep and the ESP error indicator behind the steering wheel lights up. Only after a restart of the car the error is gone. So far, I have not found a pattern in when I receive this error. Does anyone have any clue where to take a look? Or do I have to go to the dealer according to the manual?

Regards,
FlodNar.

My mother is from Gouda, nice place. We were there this year buying lot's of stroop wafels from the little ship in a side road off the market square.

Anyway we had the ESP/ASR warning a few times when running on LPG and when the car switched from LPG to petrol. It caused the engine to stutter very slightly which I think triggered the warning.

Not sure if this helps.

Hi Poggy, thank you for your reply. I don't have a LPG installation and I don't have the idea that the engine stutters, not even slightly.

2 Months ago all my cooling water was gone due to a broken entry of the radiator. The dealer replaced the entire radiator. They also had to remove (and replace) the greater part of my airco to do so. As I remember it right, I did not have the ESP/ASR error before the broken radiator. How can this be related?

The only other thing which I know causes it is low voltage, does it happen on start up or while you are driving along. If it is on start up in cold weather, it could be the battery not being strong enough. We have had this on our Land Rover a couple of times warning of transmission issue's on start up when it has been really cold.

Might be worth a search on www.eurovan2.com in case anybody on there has had the same problem.

On the average, the last 2 months were not the warmest months :D. And since a week or 2 I also have to start twice (or keep on starting a few seconds longer).

Also I don't know if the battery was replaced before. I have to check history with the lease company (it is an ex-lease since last May). The car has done 97000 kilometers (60k miles?) from which I did only 7000. Do you know what the life time is for a battery. My car has almost all options.

Is it a diesel or petrol. I think the ESP/ASR is also linked to throttle control and power delivery, so if you have had to start it twice maybe it thinks it can't control the power delivery and shuts down these aids.

Our battery was 4 years old when we sold the car and it was still fine.

It is a petrol one.

But the error does not come immediately after starting, but after a few minutes, let's say a minute or 5. Sometimes it takes longer. It comes in corners, on straights, with or without cruise control, and so on...

Today I drove almost 100km (60miles) without the ESP/ASR message. In return I received the following message twice: "Onvoldoende accu spanning", it means something like: "Low battery voltage". Only during the first trip. Back home I did not receive a message at all.

So Poggy, you might be right. Low voltage might be the thing. I think I'll shop for a new one.

Can I simply deconnect the old one and connect a new one? Does it hurt the computer or the ConnectNav+? Or does the dealer have to replace the battery?

Are you sure the low battery refers to the main battery power?
If the engines running and there's no ignition warning light then the alternator shouldbe making enough juice to avoid any low voltage problems.
Is there a backup battery in the ECU? Could it be that?
Or possibly a bad earth somewhere.

Just wait 2 minutes before starting the engine for the immobiliser to come back to work.
Sometimes the auto closing and/or auto opening of the windows may not work properly and you may need to reset them by pressing the buttons to open every window and keep pressing for 5 seconds after it is fully open, and then doing the same with the closing button.
Repeat this procedure for every window that does not auto close or auto open with the remote control.

Other possible reaons for ESP/ASR fault:
  • Worn brake pads
  • wet car floor - where the ESP control unit is
(this may happen because of A/C drainage pipe problem)
  • loose contact at the ESP control unit (under the foot of left passenger - or driver)

@ Pat:

No, i'm not sure. No offense, but that's why I joined this forum. I'm not a car specialist and I want to know more before I go to the dealer. So that I can check whether he is talking rubbish or not. :p

@ Apis:

Thanks for your reply. So you acknowledge that the battery is almost dead and should be replaced? BTW, since I have this car (over 7 months now) I have problems with my windows like you just described. The dealer wanted to replace the motors for the windows. I said: nevermind. So just resetting will solve it?

Thanks for all your help guys!

I had the battery replaced and it looked solved. But no, is wasn't. Finally, 4 weeks ago the brake block-systems were replaced on all 4 wheels. That solved it.

Thanks for your help, guys.

Easy fix mate; look in the Ulysse Hints n Tips sticky thread on this forum. (I am not allowed to post links!)
