Hi,

I have two noise issues one of which may be normal.

About 5 weeks ago I was travelling down the M1 when I got an unusual screeching noise which appeared to be coming rom the left hand Passenger air vent. The noise is similar to the noise you get when a tyre goes over a heavily painted White line on the motorway. You only appear to get this noise when there is cross wind coming from the right hand side and to the front of the car. At first i thought it was related to speed as it was happening between 75 and 90 miles per hour. Since then I have only heard it once more last week and it was again when there was a cross wind from the right. This time the speed that the sound cut in at was between 85 and 100 miles per hour. (Before anybody says you were speeding this was on a German Motorway). The wind was not as strong so it looks as though it is the combined values of Car speed and Wind speed which equates to some pressure which is doing something to the vent. Somebody told me to reset the climate control by switching it off so that all the electronic motors set the vents to their off setting then, turn it on again. I tried this but it made no difference whether the climate control was on or not or whether the vent was open or shut. The sound is coming from further down the vent tunnel and not at it's opening.

My second noise, and this is the one that may well be normal is the sound that the turbo makes when it kicks in at 1500 revs. I don't actaully remember hearing the turbo at all before now but after a lot of high speed driving abroad I can hear a whine as it kicks in. It does appear to go after the car has warmed up.

Any thoughts on the above.

Lou

Hi Lou,

Well turbo noise seems quite normal. I love the sound of the whine as it kicks in, more so now post tune-up :).

As far as other vent noise, no idea. Unless some internal pipework has come adrift [soundproofing?], I don't know. Not happened to me YET, but I will look out for it.

Hi,

The vent noise could be coming from the seal between the door and the front pillar or rear pillar. There is a duct which takes the air from the dashboard through the front doors to the rear pillars. Apparently the seals have been known to leak. If you look at www.eurovan2.com under tips and tricks there is a modification to fix it. As the speed of the car has a huge impact on the amount of air flowing, this could explain the speed issue.

Hope this helps

Andy.

Not noticed a screeching air-vent noise, but at 90+ with a good cross-wind there is a noise in mine that sounds like it's coming from a weak seal around one of the rear sunroofs. With no cross-wind there is no noise (even at even more excesive speeds!)! :D

I only notice the turbo noise at 3100+ revs and then only if the radio/cd isn't on! [8D]

Never had any noise from rear fans; in fact, I can never ever tell they are on, even with REAR switched on the CC system.

You should feel the tuned turbo!!! It rocks......

I've noticed an occasional noise from the rear fans, but it's intermittent - sounds like a bad/worn bearing.

On the subject of noises - has anyone noticed an annoying squeak from the engine when started after the car has got wet (either overnight rain or after the car has been washed)? It typically lasts about 15-20 seconds then stops. Never noticed it when starting the car when its dry....
