Hi I have a fiat punto 1.4 16v starjet and I was wondering can it be turbo'ed its currently factory at 95bhp but I am hoping it can be fitted with either the 1.4 16v t jet at about 155bhp or the 1.4 16v abarth 175bhp does anyone know if its possible for a conversion if so what needs to be bought eg manifold etc? Many thanks

Sure you can but it would be cheaper to buy anew car

You'd need a new ECU to go with the replacement engine
Quite possible a new wiring loom for the car as the new engine would have different wiring and probably new sensor's that your current one dosent

You would spend probably thousands on parts, electronics and ecu programming and it still maybe not what you wanted. Or you can go out and buy a grande Abarth for under £3k if you look in the right places.

In the old carb days you could bolt a turbo on and fettle the mechanics till it worked, these days adding a turbo to a car that doesn’t have one can get very costly. Mighty car mods spend over $13k Aus putting a $169 turbo from eBay into a Yaris. Which they managed to squeeze an impressive 200hp out of, before it blew up. And that was a 1.8 engine not a 1.4.

Thanks this was more of the answer I was looking for

Generic warning
Could be anything from failed light bulb to bad battery

It should say on the LCD screen what the error is in for
Okay what can you do if the led screen does t desplay it lights up the the walter pump has gone and the thermostat is wide open could that be why it's on?

If you are referring to the orange triangle light, it refers to ESP electronic stability program.

This cars becoming a nightmare thanks
Can someone please say owning a fiat is a good idea

You either love them or hate them. Older Fiats need servicing & looking after more often than not. Engines tend to be pretty good, it's all the other bits that seem to let you down. :D

Okay thanks as you seem to know them better than I do and don't get me wrong I love my punto I have a 2007 plate 1.4 16v the water pump has gone and I think the thermostat has gone due to the engine over heating as the fan cuts in as soon as you start the car the engine management light is on now and the stability control light is on do you think changing the water pump and timing belt and thermostat with make the eml go out or will I have to get and obd reader the turn it off as the car is currently in limp p. S I'm not driving the car ?

It's a thirteen year old car, main question is, are you going to keep it? if so, get the water pump etc done. then get the codes read & take it from there.

Just re-read your first post regarding turbo, obviously others have given advice & all I can say is a non starter, if you get the car sorted & running as it should, you will be doing good at that.

How do you know the water pump and thermostat have gone ?? the only way to tell would be to take those components out of the car, there is no output on an ecu scan to tell you if the water pump is ok and working or if the thermostat is opening and closing ?

Iam asumeing the thermostat is open as the fan cuts in as soon as you start the car and the gauge is reading cold and I know the water pumps gone because I took off the cambelt cover and when you put water in the header tank it dosnt hold water the water comes straight out of the water pump its like in one end and straight out the other but that's my own fault as the water pump failed when I was driving the car and instead of getting it recovered I I kept topping it up with water a drove it home witch was a half hour drive lucky there was any traffic

I want to keep the car as in the state its in atm it still starts and runs and drives for that matter it just doesn't hold water

If the temp sensor isn’t working then the fan will run all the time. Water pouring out of the pump means the seals have gone. The pump could still be running fine.

Likely the over heating is due to having no coolant in the car.

That said the car sounds such a mess it could now need a head gasket if it’s been over heating, has no coolant and the sensor has a fault....

Probably not a good engine to fit any sort of modifications to let alone a turbo
