I've just bought a very tatty Tipo 1.9TD and would like the benefit of other owners experience to diagnose a problem. The car and engine are generally sound with no smoke or either start up or heavy revving. It does not use either oil or water. However, the performance was not what I had hoped for. The turbo gauge (gotta love that digital dash) fails to indicate any boost. The turbo can be heard spooling up at approx 3000 rpm, but adds very little to the acceleration. I've checked the boost pipework for leaks and can find nothing amiss other than very soft pipework (is this normal? its all a bit more rigid on my Uno turbo). Any suggestions as to how to more effectively check for leaks? Could the intercooler be holed? If the turbo was FUBAR'd then I would expect blue smoke.
What is the normal boost pressure as I guess I can stick a gauge on the inlet manifold to check? Is there a service (Haynes) manual available for the TD as I've only seen petrol models covered?
I've heard these engines are little crackers or am I expecting too much.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Hows that for odd stablemates?

Bit of a long shot but this happened to my tempra td/sw.Turned out to be a loose wire which came out of the loom along with thick black cable on starter solenoid.Only a thin blue/green wire with spade on it, and found other end hanging under injector pump. Connected back together and presto, gauge working and boost as well!No idea what the circuit is though!

Eh? What the heck can that be. Overboost protection? I thought it was a purely mechanical feedback system.
Anyone out there got a wiring diagram for the TD?

Fingers crossed though, what a quick fix that would be.

I had exactly the same thing.
I bought my £275 Tempra TDSX in March 05. Realised in September that the reason the Turbo guage didn't work was because there was a piece of pipe missing between the fuel pump and a round pressure unit under the battery tray.
Connected it up with a piece of fish tank air hose and....... Wow!!!

Twice the torque and the guage works!

Unfortunately I ran out of fuel the other day and/or over-revved on a change down and now it won't pull above 3k revs.

Valve tappit broken? Could the cam or fuel pump timing have drifted slightly?
Head gasket gone internally? Rust etc in the fuel system?

I had problems with air getting in to a very worn fuel return pipe making it hard to start in the morning and VERY white and smokey in the morning. Smells and looks just like an exploded barbeque!

I don't know!!!

the turbo should spool up at about 1800rpm.does the engine make a noise like a siren? if so,turbo knackered.hard to diagnose without looking at it.you need a bosch service centre for good advice and fix.:)
