Hello everybody,
I have '89 1.6 tipo (DGT I think...).
The problem is that the engine cuts off while driving. It starts almost imediately. It gives spark at all the spark plugs, i think it's something about the SPI system 'cause once i tried to restart my car and pressed a little to many times the accelerator but there was no petrol smell. I managed to restart my car by creating electrical discharge between one of the spark plug's cable and the motor: it started right away.
My Fiat representants don't have a clue :bang: because they have the diagnostic program for cars since '93 (y)

Please help...and thank you.

I dont know what you mean about spark plug cable and motor, but i can tell you your car is not SPI. It has a carburettor. I think your trouble lies in the distributor. A new cap and rotor arm will proberly be needed.

I thought that "thing" above the carburator was something like an injection pump.
I'll follow your advice and try changing the distributor cap and the rotor arm. Hope this solves my problem.
Thanks for your answer Andy.

My Fiat is 1.6 DOHC - 1989 and it is definitely SPI - BOSCH system. There is a step motor under the air filter, it's responsible for the incoming air in the engine. If it isn't working the engine could act like that. You should also check the vacuum hose-pipes it could be that one of them has slipped out.

Over here, SPI did not come out until 1993. Until then, all cars were carb engines.
Yes, the SPI could be faulty. Maybe the stepper motor it self, or quite possibly the spacer under the SPI unit that is cracked. Another problem could be poor connections, Air sensor. It possibly is losing a signal, so the fuel is being cut off. You need to let a good garage take a look.

I would suspect the crank angle sensor and/or clearence to the pins in the gearbox. I had this same problem with an Uno SPI.
