Hi, i've got a problem. The battery light stays on dimly when driving. only occassionally turning off.

The car still runs and drives ok and has been like this for a few weeks.

i think the alternator needs replacing. the tipo has a 2litre 8v engine. which cars would i be able to get a suitable replacement from? do brava and tempras have the same alternator?

If anyone has one i need it urgently as the car is going on a long journey and i can't afford for it to fail en route to Scotland :s

thanks, Simon

Get a multimeter, switch it to 20 V DC range, put its red pin on the cable eye attached to (+) pole of the battery, black pin to any earth (e.g. engine block).
The reading should be above 14 V (depending on the alternator make) with engine running.
If it is, then the alternator is probably OK and the battery is being charged well. If it is lower, then you will have to trobleshoot the alternator (belt tension, carbon brushes, regulator).
See Haynes manual, chapter 11, for more detailed instructions.

I spoke to a couple of auto electricians who advised it is the alternator which hasn't failed but is failing and will stop altogether at some point.

They advised it may not effect the charge going to the battery

Assuming it is the alternator which is faulty, which models share the same kind of alternator?

thanks, Simon

Well I've had intermittent battery light showing for a couple of years now, it seems to come and go without any reason and certainly no problems. 2 auto electricians reckoned it was just the indicator diodes playing up. Haven't seen it for a while now.

Ok, I still need to replace the alternator to stop it though?

So does anyone know which models carry a compatible alternator? The model i have, 2 litre 8v, isn't so common. would an alternator from a 1.4 work? There is one of these available locally.

thanks, Simon

Thanks, i'll see if they know which models would fit.

Dont think at all the 1.4 will fit nor the 1.6 as they both the same,
You may find more of a compatibility in a 1.8 8v or the diesel 1,9 will fit, also try other alternatives like the bravo/bravo/marea??? may do the job may not just a suggestion!! darren...

hello simon, a bit of tech info for you.......

Your alternator is a Marelli unit Type AA125RM-65A,

I have found these dead cert alternatives according to my Auto data.

2.0 16v 1993-95..... AA125R-14v-65a
1.4 8v 1990-95.......AA125R-14v-65a
1.6 8v 1990-95...... AA125R-65a
1.7d 1993-95...... AA125R

1.9td,1.9d will not fit as these are Bosch Units,
hope this helps.....

I got a bigger alternator, I thought it was a case of as long as it fits and had sufficient charge.

The Battery light might be a case of the battery light wire coming off the Alternator going to the diode might be earthing out on something. If this is the case it will cause battery power to depleat as the charge might be going to the enine block like it did in mine when someone didn't earth my wire even though I pointed out to them that they didn't earth it and they reassured me it was okay then one journey the light came on, stayed on, then the battery died and the car switched off.

Why replace the Alternator. Just fit new brushes which are available from most car shops. Another thing it could be is poor connection to Alternator, and the plug to the back of the dash. Any resistance along the wire will light up the dash light.

I had the same problem and the solution was given by changing the dynamo-generator with a used one that had been rebuilt by the factory.
Unfortunately I had to pay 120 euros, 100 euros for the spare part and 20 euros for the labor.

Isn't that the same as an Alternator?
If you say so...
I' m sorry but english is a foreign language for me and as a result I might occasionally say something stupid :(

What I remember is that my car originally had a bosch alternator, however it was replaced with a magneti marelli alternator.

:D hey I wasn't trying to be rude or anything but I don't know everything and there was always the chance that you were talking about something completely different that I'd never heard of ;)

Someone said to me once, it could be your 'Constant Velocity Joint' I said what!? they said 'CV Joint' I said Oooohhhh!

No problem!!!
You were not rude at all, I just wanted to let you know why I didn' t know that alternator = dynamo-generator... :)

hey this sounds familiar... so tomorrow i will have to salvage the alternator from a scrapped vehicle. is there an easy way to get them out?... it looks awfully cramped in there.

except the battery light didn't come on because the wire to the alternator had been unplugged, but refitting it it was a good fit.... so many alarm bells it not funny any more.

any tips most appreciated.
