Hi all,

During the summer months my 1.4 i.e. has been through a rejuvenating process, as it got a thorough maintenance, new fluids, some new gaskets, bottom welding, body work repairs and painting, and so on. Now I have a few issues left that I would like to solve, but I am a bit stuck.

First, the wipers, a well known Tipo issue. Mine shoot through over the frame of the windshield. I saw a new wiper assembly for a tempra and I wonder if that would fit my 1995 1.4 i.e.

Then, another issue, I know the Tipo is the kind of car that is not top notch sound proofed, however I have driving noises coming disproportionally from both rear doors. I first suspected the windows had sagged, but they are nice and thight and all the way up. Are there other things related to the doors that I could check? The thin rubbers on the rear doors that sit between the front and rear doors when both are closed are worn and torn, could that be the cause?

Finally, the nastiest issue. After the maintenance I noticed that the engine while generally lively and smooth sometimes lost power, especially in high gears and low revs and on slopes or when trying to accelerate. Sometimes this lasted for a second or two, sometimes longer, it even sometimes required gearing down. It was sometimes accompanied by a glowing injection light on the dashboard, sometimes not. The engine is the version with electronic ignition (no rotor). What we have done so far: new spark plugs, new HT threads, new fuel filter, new fuel pump, injector cleaner added to four refills of the tank, cleaned out crankcase ventilation hoses, new thermostat, checked all electrical connections, checked earth wires, new battery. The new fuel pump clearly made the gasresponse better, but the issue stil comes up now and then. The needle of the temperature gauge also sometimes moves two points beyond 90 degrees and then back one below or right on 90. It is however not the fast erratic behaviour that I have experienced in the other Tipo that I drove for many years (which could be solved by slamming the dashboard), it seems like a genuine representation of reality, although my mechanic says he measured the temperature and it did not fluctuate (he did that with the car stationary though). I am unsure whether the temperature issue is related to the hesitation/missfire and loss of power. We have also considered the lambda sensor (oxygen) but it seems relatively new. It is however clearly not original. We do not suspect the cat, as the issue is not permanent and there are no strange sounds or smells coming from the exhaust. I should mention that the engine starts fine and idle is ok, maybe a tiny bit rough but no significant fluctuations in rpm. When pushing the clutch when approaching a traffic light for example the rpm often dips to 650-700, however it recovers instantly.

I would be interested in your thoughts. Should we start looking at the sensors? Temperature, oxygen? It seems to me the problem is electrical/engine management, but what do I know.

I would love to get some feedback :)

Why not put a photo up, there aren't many tipos to look at these days ! Tempra wiper gear will be fine. If they are overtaking the screen check that at rest, they are lined up with the little marks on the windscreen. One sits almost straight the other offset. Dab some vaseline where the holes are in the rubber and if that solves the noise then you know that's the problem. The door position can be adjusted in all parameters by moving the striker plate and/or the hinge bolts. Adjustment is a trade-off between ease of shut, a snug fit against the rubber, and even panel gaps. Engine-wise we seem to be suffering the exact same problems! I wish I knew the answer, Temp-wise you could try bleeding the coolant again after a trip, I was amazed to find trapped air long after I had filled the coolant

Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

We have now changed the coolant temperature sensor and all connections have been cleaned and checked once more and the issue of loss of power appears to be solved.

The only thing that is left now is that the needle of the temperature gauge sits steadily around one mark above 90 degrees. We changed the temperature sender (for an original one), but that did not solve the issue. Temperature measurement at the radiator shows that it is only the reading that is off, not the reality. :) Do you have any suggestions for fixing that?

I will post pictures this weekend :)

Hi, i had a similar problem. (loss of power) & then eventually the car lost power at the traffic lights & wouldn't start. I changed the fuel pump (wasn't that) changed the ignition coil (wasn't that) in the end it turned out to be the crankshaft sensor. Might be worth testing it. good luck

Hi, you have a good story with your Tipo, I’m glad it is getting so much attention.

The engine management on the late 1.4 i.e. models is quite simple with only a few input signals, so problems with a sensor or wiring can be critical but hard to diagnose without experience or workshop equipment.

There is a basic ODB1 diagnostic feature that can help, but I am a little confused because you say you have a dashboard ‘ECU’ warning light but I am quite sure that my 1995 car with the later coilpack ignition does not... I have never seen it lit.

My car does have regular but intermittent problems with either fluctuating idle revs or spluttering and dying.... always when it has almost warmed up and then I stop for 10 minutes or so for buying petrol or something.

Therefore I think that the engine temperature Signal is quite critical, it can certainly inhibit all fuel delivery if there is a broken wire. Also as mentioned the 1.4 cooling circuit certainly is difficult to bleed Properly, and this could affect temperature readings.

I’m sure my car runs too rich, the exhaust Tailpipe has always been sooty and fuel consumption shoul probably be better.

My Uno 1.4 i.e. also seems to run a bit rich and I have same issues with black tailpipe etc. Temperature gauge also moves above half way mark until thermostat opens fully, then drops back. It always read too low until I changed the thermostat and temp sensor. Maybe just a thing with these engines and fairly crude injection/ ecu system.

Thank you for your reply.

The hesitation was actually not solved with a new coolant temperature sensor. I then decided to change the relatively new but non OEM oxygen sensor for one made by NGK and that did the trick.

The temperature issue is unfortunately still there. And after observing this for some time, I am convinced that there is a real issue there, not just a measurement artefact. We changed the thermostat (again), but no improvement.

I am now guessing it is the radiator or coolant pump. We are going to make new temperature measurements with a mechanical thermometer soon.

Could you tell me how to properly bleed the cooling system on this car?
