Life's hard enough without a major new component exploding, what a potentially catastrophic farce. You did well to repair it. Mine came boxed up as a Bosch from CarPartsinMotion off Ebay at about the same. The old one was seized solid but after hitting it with a hammer it still hasn't fallen apart.

You won't free out the old one! Mine was seized solid when I stripped it. Yes it was a complete joke that my 'new' valve let go. I haven't the brakes bled yet so won't celebrate just yet. If it doesn't work I will be incandescent with rage. Apparently the valve is fiat new old stock.
 
My load proportioning valve assembly is a proper crusty mess with averagely-renewed brake lines and a repaired spring... changed it a few years ago and it was a swine to bleed, then last MOT I found that the spring had worn through the loop on the subframe so it was just swinging and the valve was doing nothing so no rear brakes !

Then found that because of this the drum brake cylinders hadn't been exercised so they were all seized up and needed replacing....

All brakes seem good now however fingers crossed !
 
Another small win was replacing the distributor cap securing clips. You may recall some genius who worked on the car before me replaced these with metal wire twisted around to secure the cap. I found clips on Ebay for securing the air filter housing lid on a Mercedes and they worked perfectly, like they were made for the job. I was really struggling to find anything remotely suitable so was delighted with these. When I got the cover off the remains of one rusted clip fell out! Also the cap is now in need of changing as the contacts don't look great. Its these small victories that keep you going.

No completion date in mind Jonti either aspirational or otherwise! Not much left to do other than getting the rear valance welded up. I haven't really given that much thought. Otherwise all that's left is to fit two new front hub nuts as I removed the driveshafts to change the inner boots, I need a rear exhaust section, distributor cap and rotor and a temperature sender oh yes and an alternator as it's not charging. Tried one off my old 1.7 diesel but the casings are very slightly different. Realistically would hope to have it on the road at the end of the year or early next year..

I might start its own thread but I recently acquired this 1989 Tipo 1.4 DGT in exchange for my 1995 Tempra 1.9TD. Interior is good but it has numerous corrosion issues. I won't be doing anything with it for quite some time.

Congratulations. It's certainly highly original. Your commendably brave, i couldn't face a second lot :eek:

Brave or foolish! Not sure I can face a second lot of hardship either! It was a cost neutral swap as I was realistically never going to get near the Tempra, having said that there is no guarantee I will get near this either but seeing as I have two Tipo's broken it made more sense to go ahead with the swap. Rust in the usual areas such as the floor pans and the ends of the sills along with other corrosion issues. I won't be going near it for quite some time as still not finished my 1994 Tipo also it is not stored where I live so that removes the temptation to start firing parts into it.
 
It's shorter than the Tempra, so it must follow that there's less to do :). What about the rear wheel arches and skirting, hopefully they are they will not be too bad. The Mk2 has a girder running inside the sills forward of the middle door pillar for strength, although they look outwardly identical

I don't know about less to do!although the Tempra needed a lot of work too. I have not had a good poke around it yet but this photo might give a hint.

Thankfully I have perfect rear quarter panels I took off one of my scrap Tipo's.
I think the arches seem reasonably sound but I need to have a good poke around to confirm. The back window was smashed in this so as a temporary weather proofing measure I put another tailgate on it.
