Technical Another Tipo!

Having needed to renew 3 brake lines in time for my MOT retest which i'll update on in due course, I've a new appreciation for this post which I had in mind as the inaccessible torture went on until 4 in the morning. Its a tricky job getting the tasks in the right order, so easy to forget a fitting or mess up. Well done. Are you going all the way to the load sensor?

Yes Jonti its certainly not as easy a job as it first appears. I am currently rebuilding the subframe (now fitted with polyurethane bushes) so I need to make new lines to the brake pressure regulator and from there out to the wheel cylinders. I also need to make short lines from the regulator to the pipes I ran from front to rear. Might have to temp install the subframe to get the measurements of these right. Well done getting your own sorted.

See photos of rebushed subframe. Those polyurethane bushes were a pig to fit.. required the use of a 50 tonne press!

Great job
You don't want it to end up looking like this one !

Finally have the subframe back in the car but having issues with the hubs. The hub seems to be rubbing and catching off the brake adjuster (driver side). Also I think the epoxymastic paint needs to come off where the hub mates against the back plate as more rubbing there. Has anyone any idea which side has the longer hand brake cable?

Old and new hubs together.
Is the distance from face that drum bolts onto to the end of hub that is next to back plate the same?

When you removed stub axle was there a round spacer between the hub and back plate?

Thanks for your reply Jack. Yes despite the hubs looking quite different dimension wise everything is fine. That's an interesting point you raise re the spacer. Maybe I have it in the wrong place. There were 2 I think. Must check. One is a washer behind the big lock nut.

This is the hub setup.

This is the way I had the washer I think you are referring to. Over 2 years since I stripped it.

Should the washer/spacer I had next to the stub bolt head actually be placed between the hub and the back plate? The washer beside the lock nut should be in that position if memory serves me correctly. The haynes exploded diagram is not very helpful in respect of this setup.

The nut on stub axle goes on outside of vehicle under a cap which is pressed into hub

Take everything off stub axle .
Feed stub axle through trailing arm from inside so the threaded part is now accessible from outside.
Slide spacer onto stub axle.
Slide hub on.
Fit washer.
Fit nut.
See if it all looks good.

Give yourself a treat for doing a grand job

All sorted thanks. I did indeed have the spacer in the wrong place. Brakes fitted, hubs tightened. Just need to fit drums, adjust handbrake, bleed out and then I can move on to refitting the fuel tank.
