General Tipo Wanted!!!

I see it went pretty quickly once the pics were put up - body wise it looked pretty straight and rust free on top.It might have had the wrong rear bumper though as no red strip - but no big deal.

So whats the story with the extra BHP. I remember when they were first mooted - precatylist - 158BHP was mentioned but I never thought any actually arrived here.

Mine is a J plate reg in 3/92, but appears to have been built in 11/91 if my reading of the Italian stickers on the floor pan are correct.

Was the GT a 1.8? I really don't remember it on the UK market... my Mk2 manual shows a colour picture of a blue LHD 3-door with 14" 4-spoke alloys and black bumpers including foglights and "GT" numberplate, but there is nothing at all in my MK2 brochure.

I am told by Fiat UK guru, that the first 50 or so cars that came to UK, had the updated engine. Power was muted at somewhere between 155bhp-160bhp. These cars were mainly pre-registered, before the launch of the model in 1992. Mine was registered in November 1991, and one of the first in the country.
The mapping is slightly different, and has a Weber valve for the EGR. Had mine checked and tweaked (air valve on throttle housing), on a rolling road, and it made 161 bhp. Later ones I had, best I got was 146bhp!
To drive, was like chalk and cheese. Due to the mapping, mine had a stutter around 1300-1500 revs, but then took off like a scolded cat. It would constantly record sub 7.5 secs to 60.
The mapping made it very Cammy. Sweet spot was around 2500revs, where it would then bounce the tachometer needle off the soft limiter. Sorely miss that car.
You could possibly have an early one.

These posts got me going through my old Tipo brochures! June 1991 lists the 1.8 SX as top of the range (like Bluejohn I don't remember much about these) then to the 1993 models as described. The 1991 range brochure shows a 155 bhp 2 litre in the top of range Croma. Would this be the unit used in the first few 2 litre Tipo's I wonder?

Looking at the brochure Sumplug found / posted it's clear that "his" GT is / was a late Mk1.. I've got this brochure for the Mk2:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fiat-Tipo...0effbda&pid=100005&rk=2&rkt=6&sd=172132787669

It's also clear that the 2.0ie GT had become the 2.0ie SLX, so it went for the luxury 5-door slot (like the 1.4 and 1.6 SX) with the colour coding, velour interior , split rear seats + headrests, etc. The only trim differences from the SX were listed as the (slighly weird) 4-spoke alloys and a front armrest.

Which ad where? Lost the plot slightly (more than usual).

I'm trying to recover from my Tempra being valued at £4500! How dId that happen?......

Td on gumtree.
Link at top of tipo section..and in auction watch

L214 SWS - looks familiar to me somehow..

4500...

Ah right.

SWS we've definitely seen one with that on a plate. Not sure if it's the same car or not though, or just another similar plate.

Yes, I know! Should be in next week's Classic Car Weekly! I'd better send a copy to the insurance - hey might swallow it then.......:slayer:

I'm after finding a very clean 1994 tipo s here in Ireland with only 63,000 miles, going to take a look tomorrow hopefully. Are front panels and lamps different on the facelifted post 1993 tipo? Only reason I ask is I have a 91 and a 92 scrapped for parts.

headlights are SQUAT.. so front panels are probably different,

ePER should make the differences obvious, ;)

AFAIK it's just the light units (plus indicators) and grille that are different, so if you wanted to give the facelift car the retro treatment it should be straightforward.

Both looks have their pros and cons... the original looks stubbier and the later one sleeker, but dimensionally there's very little difference to account for the effect.

Thanks for the info. The main reason is I happen to have about 2 sets of headlights and 3 or 4 grilles for the pre face lift tipo so handy to know! I subsequently bought the car as I couldn't leave it after me! Collecting next weekend.

New purchase!
