just went out to collect my new wheels from west london (cheers frosty!) and well the roads were a little more than wet :)

just slight braking would lock the wheels up as the tyres are thin and didnt give much grip. anyway, since ive got home, there is now a horrible grinding noise from the drivers side caliper.. well i say caliper, i just mean that general area. it goes on and off as the wheels turn and changes when the brakes are pressed. the brake makes a really horrble grinding noise when they are pressed at slow speeds.

hopefully ill be putting these new wheels on tomorrow (provided the wobblys come in the post) so will get a better look,

but anyone got any ideas whilst im here? the pads or disk is obviously wonky because it goes on and off. surely the disk couldnt be as its bolted straight. could i have snapped a pad or something?

You can warp a disk... If it goes on and off then its possible. Jack up the car and rotate the wheel by hand watching how the disc looks against the pads.

but would the wheels locking at around 15mph really do this? ive had wheels lock going faster than that and not cause a problem.

will be having a look tomorrow night anyway but it will be too late to get a new disk/pad as halfrauds closes at 6 and i get out of work at 5:30 and will need to check whas wrong first. then im at gaydon all sunday so cant then.. will see :)

You sure you have padding on the brake pads or you on metal to metal. This is the general noise you get under braking when the brakes pads are finished.

The fact that your wheels lock up at low speeds probably means you are pressing the brakes to hard for a car with no pads though you shouldnt drive anymore till you check it out.

The heat generated from the metal to metal rubbing will probably have caused your discs to warp and they'll need replacing also.

Continue to drive and you may cause further damage to your braking system such as damaged callipers or you may not stop and kill yourself and someone else.

Have it checked out immediately.

If you have a Midnight Motors (Lloyds Motor Spares) near you they may close at 2200 and suprisingly sometimes have Fiat Parts in stock ready for purchase.

it could be the pads finished. i wasnt brakeing hard atall though, the wheels have never locked up before and i think its too much of a coincidence that the roads were complely soaking wet that it couldnt be put down to that aswell.

I havent actually had a chance to check the pads yet. its a ****ing pain in the arse now that this happens as gaydons tomorrow and i havent got anytime to get to a place that sells disks or pads as im working today so i cant even have a look till after work and then nowhere is open! :( plus i have to drive my car to work :(

Even when you brakes are fully working unless you are on Alloys n Tyres that a fairly fat you will lock up.

When I got my Tipo I could lock the wheels any time I wanted and yes in the rain even with good brakes on normal Discs they would lock up and I would get mad Wheel Spin as well.

With the Alloys n Tyres the only reason I lock up is cause I have these really **** Hard Compund Verdestine Sportac Tyres. They only lock up in the rain under Heavy Braking mind but the Uniroyal Rainsport II tyres I had before never locked up once think its because they were Soft Coumpund.

Check your Brakes then change your Tyres ;)

You'll need a:

13mm Socket or Closed Spanner for the Rear bolt on the Calliper
15mm Open Spanner for the inner Bolt on the Calliper

Use the 15 Open to hold the bolt still while you unscrew the other with the 13.

Remember its ANTI CLOCKWISE to unscrew do not do what I did and break the screw in the bolt, as the new calliper rod cost £6.45 to replace and it needs lots of Greasing when you replace it.
