A while back, I had this problem by going through the gears, the gear stick would squeak (It's drving me mad, I can still hear it!) It went almost over night, but now its back, and for good by the sounds of it! I have greased around the pivot ball in the car, and the linkages behind the gearbox, but the underneath of the gearstick has the plate under it which is above the exhuast centre box, and can't be arsed to waste my time if that aint going to sort it! Err...any ideas?! Cheers people!

where the linkage pivots on the steering rack casing is prone to corrosion might be worth checking it

Just do the same as you did with the annoying handbrake light - remove it!
