Hi all

I've got a lovely M reg Tipo 1.4E, 71K and runs nicely if a little thirstily. Unfortunately a couple of months ago the gearbox started feeling a little stiff and now 3rd gear seems to be very unhappy.

It's easy enough to shift into 3rd gear. But if I am in third gear and I don't apply any revs (say when I am going uphill and easing off the accelerator) - it pops out and into neutral. If I apply revs (say shifting up from 2nd and gradually accelerating away before changing into 4th) - no problem.

Any ideas on what the problem is and how to fix it? I am being told it's likely to be the selector forks, and that the cheapest solution (as I am not a confident mechanic) is to look around for a replacement gearbox and change the whole thing. Does this sound right? Any advice?

cheers!

Just phoned The Gearbox Centre in Northampton 01604 755230 and they reckon it might be an external linkage and I should check with my local garage first of all, apparently this is a known problem and the Fiat Tipo has the same gearbox as the Alfa 156. I'll keep you postd but still interested to hear people's experiences....

well you could check have the gearbox oil level checked. If thats ok then its difficult to imagine there is a problem in there given the mileage.

the external links sound like a possibility, if you look down at the gearbox somewhere there will be three metal rods leaving the casing ultimately going to your gear knob. As you will see, these have several twists and turns and links and these can get a bit stiff, you could slosh some oil on.
