Angry MOT fail :(

Was rather unhappy the other week when my dads tipo failed its MOT. Had been insured on it for a few days but not allowed to drive with a broken collar bone. Then got a call from the garage the other day telling us that it failed on a number of things.

Wheel bearing, brake lines, exhaust bracket and fuel filler cap, all general wear and tear items i suppose they just happened to go at the same time!
On closer inspection it was the fuel funnel to the tank that was threaded, so as I speak, the mechanics trying to find a new tank(and i dont think its going to well).

So who else has had any recent MOT fails?

hopfully it will be back soon!

Re: MOT fail :(

Mine failed in 2007 on welding (sills) and lights

It failed in 2008 on suspension parts although can't remember off the top of my head what they were, and lights, failed a few months ago on wishbones, steering rack, lights, and the exhaust backbox needed replacing. Wow that's just MOT stuff! Never mind the repairs it needs through the year! It's still thousands cheaper than monthly payments on a new car, if you have a decent garage which I do! The only thing that will make me get rid of mine is if it is seriously stolen or written off. It's my 2nd Tipo and it's being buried with me if they can get a coffin big enough.

Welcome to the world of Fiats (all of them)

ps - don't put a Tipo to sleep - there aint many of us left!

Re: MOT fail :(

Milkbottle gave me this list of problems after the engine rebuild...

Hole in front passenger footwell close to seat mount
Hole in front drivers footwell close to seat mount
Excess corossion to front off-side brake line = it went pop on MOT
Corroded front brake discs
corroded rear brake discs
Near side headlamp inoperative
Offside indicator inoperative
Numberplate lamp inoperative

Got them all fixed and she passed. Need to get her down to MOT station again since she's out of MOT currently.

Re: MOT fail :(

Ah no, wont be getting put to sleep anytime soon. When we got told it needed a new fuel tank my dad was a little reserved to get it done, but afterwards realized that fixing it was the better thing to do! Ive been insured on the damn thing for a month and haven't driven it yet on the roads!

Il just keep dreaming that it will come back sooner rather than later!

Re: MOT fail :(

In the last 5 years my 93 2.0 Tempra`s failed on 1 wheel bearing, 1 wishbone & 2 tyres.

It would have failed this year for rust (OSF floor to sill join) where my Dad jacked it up badly about 5 years ago (pulled the joint away allowing water to get in), but I welded it up beforehand (about 6"x1").

It had an advisory for rear pad thickness this year (a few months ago), thats obviously been done now and the fuel filler neck-cap seal (not the cap, the neck itself). not sure what I`m, going to do about that yet, I havent looked properly as one of my friends Dads has been using it since the MOT, he`s very impressed with it, but finds it noisy (he had a 95 pug 405TD estate before).

Re: MOT fail :(

All Tipos will have very dodgy brake lines by now. They can and do just burst.

The fuel tank is a funny one, can't think why it's a fail... I've had the fuel tank straps under my Tipo corrode away to nothing. I removed them and got away with it. Should be OK unless I go rallying with a full tank...

You could search online for a tank -parts247 or something like that.

Re: MOT fail :(

Well I dunno if the whole tank needs to be replaced. All I know is that the cap does not fit securely meaning it failed. Im going on holiday this week so hopefully when I get back the car will be back aswell. If not there will be words with the mechanic.

Re: MOT fail :(

If you have an injected Tipo, the cap & neck are seperate from the tank.

Heres a pic from eper...

Re: MOT fail :(

Well we finally got the tipo back. Not got a bill yet but i thick it could be a shocker!
Been my first day of driving it properly and its awsome! Got quite a few dodgy looks off people as if I'd stolen it!

Got a few things to do to it as well. Sorting out the minor rust on the rear doors is a priority, finding a new front fog light to replace the cracked one, and tidying up the engine bay.

So so so pleased i got insured on this and not some other "typical" first car!
