The car starts fine with the manual choke, however the tempreature guage does not go above 50C, I am led to belive the normal temp is 90C, consequently when I put the choke in the car feels like its struggling, even after 30 minutes plus driving. Also consumption seems high, 80 miles on £10 of fuel! cheers boothers

same here mate!
manual choke 1/3 - 1/2 way in to get her started.
wait till the fuel pump finishes , take 1/3 choke manualy , start her up and
step on the gas fast . noraml temp. is 83-90 degrees - check the unit .
drive 2 miles with the choke on and slowly during driving turn it off.

I have a 1.4 dgt and had a similar problem it turned out to be the thermostat was stuck open and the engine never warmed up fully i replaced the stat and problem solved

Yes, I have a fiat UNO and it had the same problem at thermostat. It is a valve inserted in water circuit: it closes the water flux if water is not at the correct temp: if this valve does not works properly, it remains fully opened and engine never reach correct exercise temp, in particular in winter when external air is cold. So try to replace it. In my car it was locked with three screws on motor block: I guess you can easy find it by observing tubes whick bring water from engine from and to to the radiator. Hope to be helpful!
