Hi All,
I know vey little about cars so I am looking for advice. A couple of months ago I purchased a Tipo 1.9 TD with only 61000 on the clock and regular service history. When I bought it the chap told me that it was losing water through the water pump and provided me with a free replacement that just needs to be fitted. I have noticed another problem which is what I need an answer for : the water in the water tank is black and sludgy and if I take the water cap off when the engine is running smoke like fumes come out of it. Is this something to do with the defective water pump or is it more serious and is it worth repair or is it bound for scrap.
Please help as I need to either fix it or get another car before a couple of weeks when we need to go on holiday.
Many thanX..............Timbo[8)]

You're on the wrong forum, but I'll try and give you a hand anyway!

I'm by no means an expert when it comes to engines but, it sounds like it "might" be oil or something similar getting into the water supply and then heating which would cause the smoke. Although I can't figure out how water can smoke!!!

Are you sure its not just steam?!

Can I also just point out that you really shouldn;t remove the water cap when the engine is running. Its not only dangerous but could cause problems of its own!

Why not just get the new water pump fitted and see if that sorts the problem? It surely can't be a big job.
